MG MGF Technical - MGF ECU
Does anyone know weather these damned little boxs are interchangable I'm being told they have some kind of security code in them so you cant swap them about mine is a 96 1.8 k series if that helps |

Not just a swap. You are right with the immobilizer code. It could get read out at your friendly workshop with Testbook computer and put into another. Need your cars VIN to suggest the replacement p/n. |

Some sensor calibrations may need attention too using Testbook - but as Dieter says, once the 5AS immobiliser is programmed in, a replacement ECU will work. You'll need a MEMS1.9 - but I suspect that Dieter will be able to furnish you with more detail :o) |

I have just had a second hand ECU fitted to my '97 1.8 MPi. Cost me £65 plus £7 P&P from DK Salvage via Ebay. However, Morrisons of Stirling charged me £130 plus VAT to diagnose the ECU fault initially then fit and re-program the replacement I supplied. Andy |

Oh I meant to say, they wanted over £300 to supply a new ECU! Andy |

If fitting a second hand ECU, try to get the alarm ECU out of the same car and fit that too. Ideally, get the remote too, then there is no expensive programming, just turn the key. If you can't get the remote, then it is just a case of getting your existing remote recognised by the new ECU, which is simpler than trying to establish a new security link between an engine ECU and alarm ECU that hadn't known each other before. |
