MG MGF Technical - MGF Emissions

Hi help please.
I have a 1997 MGF 1800 not a VVC the car was fine but then the owner died and i inherited it. When i tried to mot it the emmisions failed when i checked the oil was emulsified so i did the head gasket. Since then it has failed the MOT on emissions again. I dont want to buy a cat and a lambda and find either i didnt need to or that the fault is still there. Can anyone help Please??

Our 1996 MPi failed on emissions 2 years ago - new lambda and it sailed through!

Hi thanks for that, can the lambda be tested?
pr smith

Hi My VVC failed on emissions, most garages will test to see if the lambda sensor has failed, mine had, I did have an added complication the thread on the boss on the exhaust manifold was shot, the garage removed the manifold welded on a new boss and all was well,I am lucky to have an excellent local motor engineers close by,a lot would have fitted a new manifold,I was also told that most cases the lamda sensor is normally at fault, however if your cat has gone try Ebay a new cat is available for about £40.This is not just a fault for MGs my Passat and my sons Pug 306 have both had the some problem.

Hi AS,

Would be good to know the name and location of your "excellent local motor engineer". They might be near enough for me to give them a try!

A really "EXCELLENT LOCAL MOTOR ENGINEER" should be able to get the lambda out without destroying the thread! Mine did!

I replaced lambda and cat last year, the lambda was a b***h due to it's situation. Would not be a problem on an FWD Rover / MG but seriously restricted on the F.

The cat was really easy, I went for a c£40 after market job from eBay and it's just got through it's 2nd test.

One tip if waiting with the car for MOT is giving it a good thrash on the way to the garage and asking them to test emmisions 1st before the car cools down.

Good luck, Russ
