MG MGF Technical - MGF Exhaust

Can anyone recommend an exhaust for a MGF please?
Emma Ferguson

There is so many to choose from Emma all really around the same sort of price £275-£350 mark

It really depends what you want out of it, Do you just want lots of noise and looks pretty or do you want one that it is tuned more for performance.

My suggestion would be come to a biggish meeting and have a look and listen to all the different ones fitted to other peoples cars.

The styling is also a consideration Quad pipe or Dual etc..

There can be quite a big difference.

PS my personal preference is the Janspeed one , it is a performance exhaust but does sound nice without being too raspy or in ya face.

FYI I have a Daytona, produced by Mike Satur. This exhaust has a fairly low throaty sound, very sports-car like. I've found that although you will notice it as being quite noisy, it has quite a controllable volume, cruising along at 2500 RPM it is very quiet, but start provoking it and becomes a bit of a monster.

The other point worth mentioning is that if you do any motorway driving, you need to consider that some of the noiser exhausts will create a constant drone in the cabin, which will be fatiguing. The Daytona doesn't seem to do this too much, you will notice that it's there, but it's never bothered me.

It's a good allrounder and has a choice of different finishers, I have 3" round finishers on mine, but you can also choose from quads and ovals as well. They're all interchangable which is a nice touch if you get bored easily.

There are a few photos and a sound clip on my site: http://www.emgeeeff.com/darkside.html

Anyway that's my two cents worth, but as Stu says, try to get along to a meet and listen to them all for real.

I've had one of Mike Satur's 'standard' stainless silencers since 2001, so I don't know if he still does it. It does pretty much exactly as Emma Jackamn says - burbles, pops &c. I listened to the clip on her webpage, and hers seems quite restrained, but maybe that's just the recording. You can hear mine on <http://www.lejambonfute.f2s.com/page2.html> going round Knockhill in the wet - not much cruising there! I've since added a Piper 4-2-1 manifold system in front of it, and it's noticeably more potent-sounding when provoked, but actually cruises a bit quieter on the motorway. I'll try to add a sound clip to the page in the not-too-distant future!

It does sound a bit quiet in that clip, however it's quite difficult to set-up a sound recording from the inside of the car (hood down windows up). I found that holding the microphone up near the windstop worked well, but then I'd have to change gear which would explain why it sounded a bit odd. I'll try to collar someone to be a passenger next time I re-record it. :-)

Oh yes, I and I forgot to mention the pops and crackles it does when decelerating in a low gear. All good fun!

there is a low cost option, dependent on the age of your F.

Fit a TF exhaust!

i have a late model (2001) F, and the exhaust is a direct swap with the TF, which is free-er flowing, and definitely better sounding. i've noticed an improvement in the performance in terms of pick up and at the top end since fitting it, all for the princely sum of £26 from ebay...

I have a Miltek Super Sports and it's loud BUT only around town, it does not drone at cruising speeds. I bought mine over the net and sound unheard at least you have the opertunity to see and hear all the systems at a local meeting.
