MG MGF Technical - MGF KILLER!!!

As all the CSMGF group know already,
I've just killed my MGF!!

Well maybe not killed it, but certainly put it on the critical list.

So here starts the epic saga once again.

Took the car out on the track at knockhill, it was wet and a lot of dirt on the road, so wasn't being too hard on the car.

However, noticed taking a few very high speed sharp corners the oil light flicked on momentarily.

Then in second gear, i was got total loss of power at 6000 revs (not VVC, rev limiter at 7200).
It felt like the rev limiter had kicked in, but got the distinctive noise of back-pressure through the exhaust.

Although on the straights, car was ok right up to 7000.

Then went into the hairpin all ok, the back end started coming out (like it had done all evening), so i gently came off the accelerator, and the back end tucked nicely in, and then there was a god awful noise as if the exhaust had just blown.

pulled in and the car was fine, excpet it made this awful noise at about 3,000 revs.

idling the car sounded ok-ish.

however slight touch on the throttle and you could hear this awful mteallic clunk noise, bit like someone hitting the car with a sledge hammer.

So it's parked up awating the verdict from the garage.

Will it ever see the road again?

Will the warranty company, supply me with a nice new engine?

Will I have to sell my soul to the devil, to buy a new engine?

Will the magic MGF fairies go and fix it in the night?

Who knows, tune in next time, and find out.

It did not sound too healthy, that's for sure. Knocking from the bottom end. Hopefully won't be too critical, however sounded like it may be. I seem to recall someome 'on here' had a VVC engine available? Dave Andrews possibly?

I suspect that warranty was the best thing you ever did - you've certainly had your monies worth from it. Like everyone else I hope it's not too serious and Morrisons in Falkirk can breath some life back into it.
David Clelland

Nice to see your car on the track Paul, not so nice to hear it as it limped off.

Lets hope its not too serious, not too expensive and not too long before your back on the road.

Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery .

The car is booked in for Friday!! but they will try and have a look at it on Monday.

Now to did out that warranty telephone number :-)

And maybe time to renew it.

£395 for two years...hmm think it might just be worth it.

SH*T!
I hope the 'F can be repaired & you get it back soon!
Sorry to hear about this Paul.
Think your warranty is probably the best £££'s you've ever spent, will need to get myself one next March.

It was a bit of a damper for what had been an excellent night for you Paul.

Again I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that everything works out well for you.

Ar5e! I hope that the damage is not too extensive, and hopefully limited to the VVC gear...

Keep us posted Paul!
Rob Bell

Hope your dealer doesn't read this BBS and find out you were on the track!!!

What's the worst that could happen..

Well couldn't get much worse than this..

Problem, still not diagnosed, probably damaged crank-shaft.

Cause: car has ditched its oil.

Outcome: Warranty company doesn't cover any seals or gaskets.

Feck.

So cost to strip engine down and diagnose problem is.. £269 + VAT minimum.

If crankshaft gone, talking well over £1000 additional to repair.

Advice from garage, source a new engine.

So guys, anyone got a spare engine????

paul weatherill

MGF centre, should be able to source your a low milage version for say £700
Will Munns

Not what we wanted to hear mate :-(
D Jamieson

Yup, car is getting picked up and shipped down to the MGF Centre.

Bummer

Sorry about the bad news Paul.

feckity-feck. Not good. Did mention your predicament to Mike when I was down on Sat. Was joking you'd be on the phone for a new engine. Not so funny now though.

He does have three VVC engines in at the moment though. He also alluded that if you wanted a new engine, you'd probably be wanting some work done on it?

And where did the oil go? Looks like your oil leak may not have been the rocker cover after-all?

Recently we were all going to club in and get a hydragas pump. Maybe it's a trailer we need?

Echoing above comments... :((

I expect (hope) MGF centre would be in a position to at least strip down and diagnose problem cheaper than Rover. Not good. Keep us posted. Dave might start a whip-round!
