Sounds as though you've had this problem thoroughly investigated, so the chances that you've missed a leaking exhaust manifold gasket is small - but it can certainly result in a 'tappety' like noise. I had this with my car - turned out to be a loose head stud! The noise was more of a 'phut phut' noise - and the intensity changed with engine temperature.

Is your car down on power at all George?

Has the head gasket been inspected since replacement? (There could be a gasket leakage without coolant loss)

G,
what vicosity engine oil you used? & how many liters did you put in? i had the same prblm, but didn't changed the crank & cam shaft. apart from the normal overhaul parts after an engine failure, i changed valve lifters, valve guides. but the noise is still there even though using 4.5 liters Liqui-moly 10W40 semi-synthetic engine oil. then at the last oil-change, i used 4 liters of castrol magnatec 10W40 and the clickity-clackaty noise is gone. hope the cure for your prblm is as simple as mine.

cheers
Meg

Noisey Clacking could be a worn bearing in the VVC unit caused by to tighter cam belt, worse at idle . Have the same problem with my 18000 Km F Currently trying to source a new bearing as Rover only supply total VVC unit at great cost. Interested in any other comments on This .

Try contacting either Mike Satur or David Andrews (http://www.mikesatur.co.uk and http://members.aol.com/DVApower/ respectively) John - they may be able to help you out with the appropriate parts :o)
