MG MGF Technical - MGF rear plastic screen cracked
Hello Can anyone advise where I can get a replacement rear plastic screen as mine cracked in two places today.? Are they easy to fit, I heard there were some companies offering a postal type replacement service, any information re. this would be most appreciated. Finally what can I expect to pay.? Thanks in anticipation Bryan

Thanks for your help Just hopefully some useful information for anybody who has the same problem in the future. I decided to check for cover under my insurance and they advise that it is covered under windscreen replacement. I have been advised to take it to a Rover/MG dealer, get it replaced and they will foot the bill less the £50 excess I have to pay. Sounds good to me for £50, and I leave the riveting to somebody else. Bryan

I've managed to crack my rear screen twice in two days! Yesterday I unzipped the screen and was laying it down flat on the parcel shelf, prior to lowering the hood, when I heard the dreaded noise of the screen cracking. This morning I decided that, since the screen had cracked even when I had unzipped it, there was no point doing that, so I just threw the hood backwards. A question. Does the rear screen become more brittle with age? Ralph :(

Ralph, Yes it does become more brittle with age but more so with temperature. Although the sun has been shining a lot lately the air temp is quite low. I never lower my hood until the screen is warm. Bitter experience! Bruce

Bryan, Which insurance company do you use? I was told that only 'glass' windows were covered by this, and that this was standard across most insurance companies. Thanks, Heidi

Most of the time I zip my screen out before putting the hood down (to avoid the problems mentioned above. It only takes 30 seconds or so). I find that if I dont zip it out, the screen creases, and rubs on itself cuasing scratches. A small price to pay for an easy life I feel. Rog.

| I just got my windscreen back from sottopwindows.com instructions on removal and refitting on the site take your window out all you need is a drill to get the rivets out then send it special delivery - £111 he tells me the quality is better than the original - I am fitting it tonight - oh yeah you need to buy a rivet gun about ten quids. | I have just had my rear screen replaced under the windscreen section of my insurance policy - The total bill was £584 but all I had to pay was the £50 excess. Can someone give me any advice on maintaining my new clear screen and on how to avoid scratches and cracking in future. Thanks Andrew |

avoid kinking the screen- do this by guiding the fold as the hood opens. when cold unzip the screen before dropping hood. when really cold heat before doing anything to it. when travalling long distances/ leaving car overnight with the screen down unzip the screen if travalling with the hood up but the screen down ensure the screen is anchored with the poppers (I have had it go pop and end up on the outside of the car whilst doing 70!) To avoid scratches: (depends on parinoia) lay soft cloth on clean screen befre lowering roof never put anything on a dirty roof To see thru: clean regulatly with Graygate or Autoglym super resin polish

Just had window and zip replaced by M&M Trimming, Queen Mary's Avenue, Watford, Herts WD18 7JR tel 01923 230340. Can't quote price as dealer paid as pre-sales on used F. Excellent job. Really nice bunch of oldish guys. They also make hoods from scratch - a customer gave them an Alvis Saloon with the top half cut off and they made a superb hood and frame for it.
