MG MGF Technical - MGF Steptronic Problem

Hi,

My 2000W reg steptronic MGF has developed a fault where it will kick when fist put into drive or reverse when its cold. When you put it in drive the first time the engine will stall, it doesn't stall in reverse but just feels strained. By the time I have driven a few hundered yards it drives perfectly.

I have done 300 miles in it this week (including one journy of 120miles) and it drives fine on the road.

I wasn't really bothered by it as the car is ok to drive apart from this minor niggle, however tonight the car started to make a terrible screeching noise on acceleration/deceleration, upon inspection it appears that the engine stabiliser bracket on the engine has broken!

Firstly, has anyone had a problem like this before?, secondly has anyone got any idea what might be wrong with the car and whether I can fix it with the gearbox in the car? (well I can hope can't I!)

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Andrew, my 2001 Steptronic will sometimes "kick" when first put in Reverse from initial starting to reverse out of garage but it is only a mild jolt that I would have expected from an auto box. Does yours do this every time - even when the engine is hot? Re your second problem I can't offer any avice, sorry. Robert

Hi Robert,

My auto box kicks only when the car has not been driven for a long period (over night) and it only does it the first time, as soon as I have moved it to the end of the drive it's ok.

I can just change the engine stabiliser bracket but i'm a bit concerned by what other damage it may be doing to the engine mountings.

replace the bracket and the snatching may go away

I wouldn't worry too much about the mounts

If the bracket is the same as on the standard car you have to do the bolts that clamp the rubber _really_ tight or it will rattle like hell

I have replaced the mount but the snatching is still present, i'm worried that it will break again on next time not so close to home.

Anyone with any ideas about the gearbox?

Using the correct gearbox oil is crucial.
The specification should be listed in your service manual.

I have changed the oil using the correct specification Esso EZL799 oil as specified by Rover. Maybe I should try changing it again? Is there a filter that needs replacment?

My steptronic does that..When I put it into drive first thing in the morning it feels like it's trying to drive away with me even though my foot is on the brake. Took it to a local M.G. garage who replaced the throttle body & stepper valve, they also stripped the head and refaced all the exhaust valves... It cost over a grand and only cured it for about a month..Its doing it again now...so it looks like another trip to the garage..either that or I'll px it against a manual
