MG MGF Technical - MGF Trophy on track

Looks like i might end up taking an MGF Trophy on a double header track day to Spa.

From what i know the car should be pretty much ready to go. but just to put my mind at rest anybody got any comments on the car on track. Do the brakes stand up to the abuse etc

Also are there any specific alignment settings that are suited to the trophy? I have a rough idea what the standard MGF settings should be but i am guessing the trophy might be different

Thanks for your help
M Lawrance

A double header at Spa? You lucky lucky person!!!

Regarding the Trophy on track - you shouldn't have any problems. Get the car serviced before you go, with fresh oil etc, change the brake fluid to DOT 5.1 (you'll probably have DOT 4.1 as standard) and ensure that all the brake pads and discs have plenty of life left in them.

From what people say, the AP racing set up is pretty immune to over heating, so with the suitable brake fluid, you shouldn't have any problems there.

Tracking wise, there isn't anything special you need to look at - the standard Trophy settings are more or less the same as the standard car, but with a little less toe-OUT at the front (0¼05' toe-OUT as opposed to 0¼10' toe-OUT). You could go for 0¼00' toe (parallel) at the front, as per TF - and this may be a good idea. Check the ride height - some Trophys I have seen have been excessively high. Should be 358mm at the front wheel, measured from the wheel centre to the wheel arch lip vertically above.

Have a look at the MGs on track website, there are a number of "Frequently asked questions" there that may help you to prepare.

I'd recommend some face cream: will help ease those face muscles responsible for smiling and grinning so much after driving around such an awsome track! LOL

well i shouldn't be going really. i am selling my honda powered elise, which i was going to be using due to impending baby.... but the days at spa are booked so i am having to persuade teh mate who was coming with me to buy his mums Trophy off her (she doesn't like it... god knows why she bought a bright yellow limited edition MGF in the first place).

If brakes are good that was the main worry, i know the engine will be fine. k-series are bomb proof ;) specially after being used to honda power.

i will get fresh oil and alignment done and probably change the F1s to something that doesn't melt but apart from that it all looks good.

just hope its not to slow, i used to love my old MG on track but i have used anything that slow for a while, but atleast now i get to drive there in some comfort.

incidentally... anybody want to buy a honda powered elise. 0-60 under 4 sec 0-100 9.5 sec. it really is stupidly quick you know... and it could be yours for £14.5k

Well, almost anything other than a SC Honda Ariel Atom is going to feel slow after your Honda-Elise LOL!

The Trophy is going to feel a good deal slower - but you can hustle quite a lot of speed through the corners... certainly enough to surprise many in my experience, especially if the conditions turn wet! :o)

The Elise you're selling - is it a S1 or S2?
Rob Bell

it is S1. its the original blink demo car. fully updated with production conversion bits. resprayed. al the suspension and brakes sorted...everything sorted really. lovely car, stupidly quick and capable

i used to love my MGF in the wet. I am quite happy hustling a slower car to be honest... fast cars scare me too muc

Hi Matthew,

Could you tell me your email address please as I would like to ask some more questions about your Elise.

Many thanks
Steve

TT230 not powerful enough then Steve? ;o)
Rob Bell

Hi Rob,

I haven't installed the TT230 yet ! In fact I have spent hardly any time in the garage at all lately - never mind winter will soon be here !!

I am sure it will be plenty quick enough for my lowly driving skills !! - but the Honda conversions are quite simply something else !! Bogie from Seloc has a SC version and outdrags Ferrari 360 's :-o

Basically I am a weak soul unable to resist temptation and will no doubt be damned forever - but will have fun in the process !!

Invite to have a look around a TT unit is still open whenever / if you want ?

[Apologies for thread drift]
Steve Owen

Hi Steve

You can email me at Matthew dot lawrance at db dot com

Somebody is looking at the car tomorrow though who is very keen, so might not be a good idea getting your hopes up ;)

but just incase that person drops out.... this car is amazing. and the cheapest way you will get to a honda conversion. and to top it off... you don't have the worries a TT230 conversion would give you. its a completly standard engine after all.
M Lawrance

Steve, Matthew's car sounds awsome - good luck if you are after it! :o)

Regarding the supercharger - thanks! You probably guessed that that RR didn't happen - but should be heading up to Emerald once the new head is on the engine (soon?)
Rob Bell

Hi Matthew, - Many thanks - you have mail - fingers crossed !

Rob - no problem - just let me know a bit in advance so I am in and you are more than welcome anytime.

Cheers
