MG MGF Technical - mgf vvc standard exhaust system

Hi guys. Some advice please ref the standard VVC exhaust system.Car is 97 on 28k.I understand from various websites that(to my suprise)the standard exhaust is of stainless steel.Mine is the original system and when it went in for MOT last week(it passed)I was a bit dubious because the 2 side seams on the main box were a bit rusty.I know a lot about MGBs,but the MGF is on a different technological planet. How much of the system is actually stainless?I assume the cat isn't(but dont really know-never had a car with a cat before)but what about the downpipe and the pipes coming out of the main box(they definitely look scruffy)?Does "stainless"imply a lifetime of usage or are such systems just longer lasting than mild steel? The query may sound a bit daft to old hands but I guess I need to know if I should start saving and well before next year's MOT.Any advice would be much appreciated.Mose.

Thought the 'F's system was a mild steel, not stainless? Only reason it doesn't corrode as quick as 'normal' exhausts is because it's short, meaning water is less likely to accumulate in it?

Close, because it's short it warms up quicker - evaporating water and acids, so short journeys don't kill it as fast.

According to the Workshop Manual 'the entire system is manufactured from stainless steel'.

I have a VVC and (touch wood) the exhaust is still going strong, after nearly seven years.

Oh, well it certainly doesn't _look_ like stainless steel, but if it is then great!!

think there are different quality standards of stainless steel.

your cutlery isn't made from the same stuff as your exhaust.

Do you know your martensitic and precipitation hardening stainless steel from your austenitic-ferritic stainless steel?

I don't ;-)

Just know you've got to be careful, at what "claims" to be stainless steel.

I've still got my original 7.5year old exhaust too. It's in the loft ;o)
