MG MGF Technical - MGF WINDOW UP THEN DOWN THEN UP AND NOT DOWN !

Hi - would appreciatte any help with this one please as I have to card swipe ito work regulary and it looks great Im sure me hanging out of an open door to do this!
Yes its that old electric window chessnut again ( I wish it was both windows ,but sadly no just drivers side )
It was working intermitantly (sic)then packed up alltogether (at least its in the up position )
I bought a window mechanism with combined motor from Ebay and attached the cars window wires to it and the Ebay mechanism works but you have to swap the wires around to make it go up again !?
I cant hear the original motor (still inside door)buzzing like the Ebay one so I assume that its dead but I cant work out the deal with the switching wires around on the Ebay one to get it up/down
faulty rocker switch maybe ?

thanks for spending time to read this - any replies no matter how short would be very much appreciatted

Have you checked it's not just corroded electrical connectors? The door s can get very wet inside with rain getting past the window seal.

Thanks Chris I will try that - it was showing a sign of damp when I pulled the sealing paper back - and I havnt physically seen the original power pack yet as its still in the door

will try that next

Hi,

If your swapping the wires over and pushing the switch in the same direction (to make the motor go in the other direction), it proves that the wring to the motor is ok and probably the switch is at fault. I've had a switch go with the window down and wiggling it, got it going. I proved it by swapping the drivers and passengers window switches over and seeing if the fault moved tothe passenger side.

Good luck
Keith

Thanks Keith

That sounds as though it could be the case - do the switches come out that easy do you remember ?

Cheers Keith

I have just looked at the diagrams of the electric window operation and the drivers side lift goes thru an ECU unit - do you think that this could be where the faut lay ? as the connecters from the rocker switch had no problem raising and lowering the Ebay window chassis (albiet having to swap the connections round for up and down )does anyone know how to test these/price of please - or is it possile to bypass the ECU ?

thanks Chris

Chris, what age is your car? All versions of MGF and TF use a similar switch - and arguably it is easier to remove the switch from the Mk1 console, as the switch console pushes out from the main dash by pushing from behind.
The switch then pushes out very easily once the connector is disconnected.

What you should do next is swap the left for the right hand switch, and reconnect both up. If the problem is now transferred to the left hand passenger window, and the right hand window functions normally, you've isolated the problem!

It is possible to clean the switch contacts reasonably easily. Some emery paper and some contact cleaner from your local electrical supplies store should do the trick :o)

Hope this helps

Thanks Rob will try that in the A.M the car is an X reg 2000 by the way

Update - pushed out the 2 rocker switches and swapped them over - still the same ( pity ! )
then -
rigged up the spare motor and arm combo again and it worked in the up and then the down position as well .2 -3 times then just the one direction again 8(
then -
rigged it back up how it should be in the car and this time the window is jolting slightly down ( as though it wants to but smething either mechanically or electrically is stopping it ),then goes back up and then jolts down .25 inch again a couple of times and then wont do it anymore

AGGGGGHHHHHHH !!!!

( and it keeps bl@@dy raining everytime I go out to do it ! )

any opinions (any !) gratefully accepted

Shame the switch trick didn't work - it is probably the most common cause of this problem.

Chris, just for my better understanding the problem - when you had the spare motor out of the car and rigged up to the wiring, the set up failed in one direction?

If this is the case, it would seem unlikely that there is a mechanical problem (although the juddering that occured when you put everything back together again suggests that the window guide alignment could be an issue) - and possibly points to an electrical issue.

What I'd probably look at next is to take a multimeter and see whether the electrical signal actually arrives at the motor when the motor fails to move in a single direction. If this is the case, then work your way backwards until you can isolate the fault.
