MG MGF Technical - Mintex 1166 rate of destruction

Changed the rear discs this evening and noticed the Mintex 1166 pads are nearly half worn & have crumbled at the edges, in 2000 miles and 3 track days. OK the 1166 isn't quite as robust as the 1177, but is this 'normal'?
I've seen OE pads do this when track days are thrown into the equation, but was expecting the 1166s to a. last longer and b. not fall apart. Anyone else had a similar experience?

Looks like I'll have to go for 1177s, unless anyone would like me to be a guinea pig for an alternative?
Mike Hankin

I am surprised Mike. I can't seem to 'kill' my rear 1166s! :o}
Rob Bell

Rob, I'm surprised too. Were yours fitted along with new rotors, i.e. everything nice and flat? Mine were fitted to worn rotors, maybe that would explain it partially at least. I checked the front pads (SBS Carbon Ceramic) that were fitted at the same time, and they look like new still. Reluctant to dabble in EBC Red, although evidence is suggesting that a ceramic option might be better. The balance front to rear is near-perfect with 1166s, so I don't want to stray too far from their level of braking.
Mike Hankin

I may have a pair of 1177s if you are interested? From what Dave says, the combination with APs is terrific.
Rob Bell

The combination of standard fronts on the APs and 1177s on the rear is terrific.

I've never been happier with the brakes, perfectly balanced. They work from cold and don't fade on track days (not that they've had much punishment recently). They are noisy around town so you do have to put up with sounding like a bus sometimes.
Neil Stothert

OK, I'm sold. Neil, I'm already annoying dogs with the ceramic fronts so 1177s being noisy concerns me not ;o)

Rob, I've re-fitted the 1166s for now, the likelihood is I'll be needing at least one new caliper (handbrake mechanism currently requires weekly unseizing on one side and the other side isn't much better), so I'll aim to do it all in one hit ready for Donington in October. Are you likely to have 'stock' then?
Mike Hankin

I have one pair that Paul hasn't used as he's selling his F. I'll ask him, but I am sure that you can have his if you pay him what he paid for them?
Rob Bell

Sounds fair to me... I'll mail you after North Weald so see if they're still available, determined to wring one more event out of these pads.
Mike Hankin

Okey dokey - no rush :o)
Rob Bell

Cor... trying to flog off my pads already Rob!!
Thought I wouldn't notice eh? ;-) ;-) ;-)

Still haven't sold the 'F yet. Not sure if I'm hoping to convince Jo to make it a race car, or whether I just can't bring myself to sell it.

Anyways... to the pads...
Yes, I'm willing to pass these on to Mike at cost. I'd only be selling them with the car if I kept them.

Mike, watch out running the 1166s low. I ran pads low on stock callipers and the last few mm of pad material disintegrated at 100mph breaking round the left hand bend before Quarry at Castle Combe...!! The piston popped clean out (read "ripped clean out") and caused me no end of probelms staying on the black stuff.

If you want the pads let me know - although I don't read this forum as much at the moment so email is best.

Paul Nothard

ROFLMAO!

Paul, I was wondering whether you'd sold the F yet! Go on, you know you want to keep the old gal! Coming to a track event or race meeting near you soon...

Mike, as it happens, I have another pair if Paul still wants the ones he's already paid for. Just let me know after North Weald what you want to do.
Rob Bell

Paul, thanks for the cautionary tale, glad you didn't join the long list of people that Avon Rise into Quarry has claimed - that's one place where I try to keep my late braking instincts under a bit of control ;o)

If I ever meet the guy who rubber stamped putting single-pot Rover 800 calipers with postage-stamp sized pads against unvented, saucer-size discs as a Good Thing, I'll be showing him my expanding pile of dead rear brake parts. No doubt there was sound financial sense in it...

Rob, thanks, I will let you know.
Mike Hankin

Low unsprung mass Mike? ;o)
