MG MGF Technical - Missing & Poor Fuel Economy
My F has developed a serious miss in the engine. Also the fuel consumption has dropped from 35mpg to around 28mpg (Urban Cycle). It seems like it is getting too much fuel as when you keep your foot very lightly on the go fast pedal it drives a little smoother. If you try and drive it normally it is very lumpy. Any Ideas |

Funny that's exactly what mine is doing, oops that is my car. |

Engine obviously running in *fail save* mode due to any troubles with sensors or the ignition. This is for a none VVC. At first check the ignition parts, distrubutor cap and finger, aswell as ignition cables and sparks. Check sensors and affiliated wiring from the beginnning at the large ECU connector to the end at each sensor, including the sensors themself. Likewise Coolant Temperatur sensor, idle air temperature sensor or throttle position sensor. see here for more about sensors. http://www.mgfcar.de/sensor/ HTH Dieter |

Had the same problems with my sons MGF. A change of Distributor cap and Rotor arm fixed it! |

If your car is a pre-2001 model, then I suspect that Eric is right (http://mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/common_problems/distributor/stuttering.htm) If the car is later than that, then consider sensors - the crank position sensor is a favourite... |

The car is a 1999 V reg 1.8mpi. After cleaning up the distributor cap and rotor which looked like the picture of the new one Rob, a new set of ignition leads were fitted and so far have seemed to have cured the problem. An extended run into the borders tomorrow (not to steal sheep) should give a god test. |
