MG MGF Technical - MOT Fail

Just got the F back from MOT and it failed! The back brakes would not lock up and were not giving any resistance reading on their machine. Is this a common fault on an F that isn't used much over the winter? if so could it be just in need of a quick strip down and clean / lubricate of the sliding parts if they are sliding calipers.

Any thoughts would be useful.

Sorry to hear your F failed the MOT today - snap - so did mine.

The back callipers can stick so this may be causing your problems. I had one lock on and needed replacing after smoke billowed from the rear wheel.

My F failed on a seriously corroded brake pipe. I see from the archives this does occur at times. In for fix at the end of next week. Looks quite a hard job to get to the pipes to change them as they are at the back end of the engine bay.

Hope your fix is as 'easy ' as mine.

Cheers

The older MGF are starting to get rear calipers wearing out or seized, they take a lot of road dirt, it is probably more cost effective to exchange them for reconditioned units as freeing them off is usually a temporary solution.

That brake pipe corrosion is wierd, because it seems to happen on the section that runs across the engine bay, which is well above road spray. The sections near to the wheels look good as new.

Yes the corroded pipe is right up in the engine bay, it is hard to see, so I would have thought hard to wet and corrode. I was amazed the water gets there to cause much damage. As its so high and just after the 'T-piece', it looks hard to replace easily unless someone knows of a quick method that I can pass onto the fitter on Friday. Lower sections seem fine.

It was also noted at MOT, that my radiator is starting to corrode away too. No leaks yet but on my list to change once the weather improves.

The Green Squirrel is now ten years old and has flown through her MOT - no problems at all and even the lights show me the way home!

All well now just needed the calipers removed and cleaned & greased in relavent places. Now have one of the new MOT certificates don't think they look as official as old A5 ones!.

The F is now for sale if anyone is interested?
