MG MGF Technical - my soft top creaks or is it the window

Does anyone have noise problems with their mgf 1.8 (1996)soft top.until recently the interior has been quiet but just recently a noise which sounds as if the fabric is stretching has appeared. It seems to come from the drivers side just above the top of the window.Could this be really a window rattle or is the hood playing up.If anyone has any suggestions then please let me know.unusual creaks and rattles are always hard to place.

Michael, I had this problem with my new TF. The MG fix is to lubicate the window seal with silicon lubricant(Unipart GEM 315, available from your dealer at approx £3.00) it works and is well worth a try. You could also try a small amount of cockpit shine which is also silicon based, dont get it on the glass though! let me know how you get on.

Hi Michael, I have somthing like that on my 1998 F. I had put it down to the layers of fabric that make up the roof just coming apart and rubbing against each other. It sounds a wee bit like velcro. And is also above the driver. I have kind of got used to it now. But would be interested in a solution if you find one.

Stupid suggestion but - is it the bit of velcro that holds the hood to the frame just above the drivers head? As this wears it can move as the hood flaps in the wind.

Thanks John. Had thought that but dont think so. If it is that how do I stop it rubbing?

Michael,

Try lubricating all the joints on the folding mechanism of the hood.....I used wd40 (not the best I recall, but it was to hand) and that solved all creaks and folding issues that I had with the hood. I just repeat the treatment every 3 months and no worries. I'm sure there must be a more approproiate lubricant for this sort of thing....open to 'sensible' suggestions!

Michael,
We had a similar noise problem on our '96 which was cured by Rob's suggestion.
If you do try it, make sure that you put card, or something similar, between the metalwork and the hood, to stop the lubricant staining the hood.
Good luck
Graham
