MG MGF Technical - MY2K Fascia - f.a.o. Rob Bell

Rob,

Got loads of pix of fascia removal (both Mk1 and MY2K) but need some help with the heater control box. It needs to be brought forwards when doing a conversion, any ideas on how it is done?

Funnily I was admiring your hard work on the website yesterday Andy :o)

It sounds as though you need to remove your heater box to sort the control cables in any case.

Regarding the solution on how to move the heater box forward, then I think that the easiest solution would be to revise the way that the 'box is mounted in the dashboard. Failing that, an MY2000 fascia front could be used in front of the existing heater box?

Unfortunately, whilst I had the centre console in pieces over the weekend, I didn't really have a close enough look at the way that the heater controls were mounted - d'oh!

We ought to meet up and see if we can't get something sorted out?

Tried the latter - this is how Scarlet is at the moment. The fascia is approx 8mm in front of the heater control box (unsightly gap).

The heater box is screwed into a metal carrier with 4 screws, two underneath and two on the face - this makes moving it in the carrier difficult. See pic:

and

It might be possible to move the entire carrier forwards bu elongating these slots:

>> http://www.sfforever.co.uk/viewgallerypicture.asp?id=19-27-103-88-89-90-91-92-93-94-95-96-97-98-99-100-101-102-104-105-106-107-108-109-110-111-112-113-114&queryon=16 <<

But this may cause problems here (if these clips are necessary):

>> http://www.sfforever.co.uk/viewgallerypicture.asp?id=18-27-103-88-89-90-91-92-93-94-95-96-97-98-99-100-101-102-104-105-106-107-108-109-110-111-112-113-114&queryon=16 <<

Also, off the top of my head i can't recall if anything else screws to this carrier (like the transmission tunnel for instance)

When can we get together mate? Do you want to take this off board (email)?

Brilliant pix - shows exactly what needs to be done.

Need to fabricate a new bracket that uses those two screw mounts on either side of the heater box. Basically a U-shaped thing rotated onto its side.

Time for some dodgy ASCII art!

New screw mount at the front
---------- -> screw to old fixture point here

____________^ -> screw to old lower fixture point here

Hopefully you can see what I am getting at here? I don't blame you if you can't! LOL

The main difficulty is going to be rigidity of your bracket: perhaps a folded metal making the new braket into a box section?

Drop me an email, and we'll sort something out :o)

Think i know what your getting at Rob (ASCII Art, Art ASCII, Art Askey, Arther Askey!! "Evenin' Playmates! - Oh what a wonderful thing to be...") Sorry, lost the plot a little there!!! :-)

Arther Askey wasn't very successful, but i think i know what you are getting at, will mail you tonight mate, hoefully with some sketches...

Well that ASCII figure was an unmitigated failure!!!

Try this - posted on Jerry's forum: http://www.xpower-mg.com/forum/attachment.php?s=&postid=108596

x = distance that you want to move the heater forward by.

Not sure whether you need to make the 'box' section or not - all depends on the rigidity of the material you are using. The internal dash structure is galvanised mild steel (I think). The heater brackets are simply bent to suit - without reinforcement. Therefore a strip cut from a sheet of mild steel of similar thickness of that used in the dash structure could be bent to a suitable shape and should do the trick without having to do the reinforcing 'box'.

What do you think?
Rob Bell

Other people have done this and i don't recall it being this complicated mate, we must be missing something.

SF

If the bracket is simple - I think that the single strip bracket should do the trick...

Are we missing something? Not sure. Russell sent me details of his conversion - but he used an MY2000 fascia over the orginal heater box...

Who else has performed a MY2000 conversion on their car?
Rob Bell

>> but he used an MY2000 fascia over the orginal heater box <<

That's what i did, but i still have the gap. Jaime has done this (or rather Garry did), but i haven't had a chance to see his handywork yet.

Daz responded on the other thread. Answer: a bit of MDF...

... you were right, we were missing a trick! LOL (Not that bending a strip of metal is all that hard!!!)
