MG MGF Technical - Mystery Water somewhere??
i need some advice to the location of some water in my MGF. This only happens after it has been raining, when i pull away or reverse from standing i can hear a rush of water from inside the car. There is no obvious ingress of water into the cab, i wondered if somehow water was getting inside the passenger door and swilling about whilst moving. But there isnt any sign of leaks from the underside of the door, which would seem likely, as after quite a while the noise stops. Can the coolant in the pipes be heard moving through the underside pipes? surely not if there are not any air pockets? The only other possibility i can think of, is that i park with the rear of my car on the downside of a slight slope/ fall. Can this be stopping rainwater from draining out the channels to the base of the windscreen? Has anyone else encountered this? or does anyone have any other ideas? Thankyou. |

could be the door vent holes blocked (check underside of door and make sure they are clear. Could be under the bonnet, there are a few 'traps' under there which make sure the water gets down to the road, again vent holes might be blocked. >rush of water I have assumed you ment slosh of water, rather than a stream of water here? Yes Will, I meant 'slosh' |

If you are sure it's under the bonnet then try pouring water into the vents, both should end up on the floor, although they go diffrent routes (drivers side->over cowel->floor, passanger side->thru heater intake->floor) This should help you find the cause, also look for water under the bonnet in the spare wheel arch. If you are getting wet carpet in the pasenger footwell it is most likely comming from the heater intake box. The box itself was not leaking but the box goes through the bulkhead, and there is a high density foam gasket thats surposed to keep the water out. With age the foam shrinks back and if you remove the glove box and look straight up you will see the air ducting. Remove it and you will see the gasket and the bottom of the intake box slot. You will probably see daylight from both ends of the slot. If you put a hose on the windscreen you will be looking into a waterfall! My cure was to relase the intake box (Lots of socket extension bars and small fingers needed). Then put a ring of automotive sealent (halfords) around the edge of the gasket. Refix the intake box. From inside the car put another ring of sealent around the bulkhead/gasket joint. This cured the leak and the pasenger has dry feet now. |

Nick, this doesn't sound like his problem, he's talking about free water, not water in carpet. |

Nick, Although not Jon's problem you have managed to save me trawling through the archive... :o) I have a charateristically wet passenger footwell, started on Sunday.... Tim |
