MG MGF Technical - New hoods... where can I get one?

My other half has finally managed to crack the rear window on the car.... This gives me the excuse I need to replace the hood!

The reason being, I have an old two piece hood which seems to suffer the poor fitting problems of early F's. I've been considering a new one piece roof for some time know but I just don't know who to buy from and how easy they are to fit. (The other half will be doing the work if it's not too difficult!). Can anyone recommend a good source for a new replacement hood?

Many thanks....

Hi Lisa,

Nice license plate!!

Mike Satur does replacement hood covers which IMO are much better quality than the OE part. Also they come in a number of different colours.

B&G also do some nice hoods they have a rain channel running down the side. i have spoken to Mike satur who sends the cloth to recover the hood whereas B&G send a complete exchange hood unit inc frames etc or will fit for around £20 +vat, i am hoping to get mine fitted on Friday :0)

Whatever you decide.
I'd not try to swap the fabric myself, but would try the mentioned exchange way of the complete hood.

Works are easy to swap the complete hood. T-Bar to remove and than only 4 bolts to remove.

You should get the better half also to change the front screen frame sealing on the same job !

Several websides at Paul Lathwell, Rob Bell and also Tony from Hants explain the works.

Hi Lisa,

Recommend using B&G. I bought a hood from them last year at Silverstone and fitted it there (green hood for a BRG MGF).

I miss my MG :(

John

My hood fabric has been pinched by the folding mechanism (I presume) and I now have small hole in my hood. Can this be repaired and, if so, any recommendations, or do I need to follow Lisa's route?

John,

It should be repaired under warranty by MG Rover.

If out of warranty, I'd recommend using B&G.
I had the same problem (used it as an excuse to get a hood the same colour as the car). B&G did a straight swap.

Very odd.

The new hood i got from Mike came complete with frame. I know this 'cos i fitted it at Silverstone last year!!!

Hi John, sorry to hear that mate :o(
How's the family? Any chance of quietly sneaking a cheap MG into the family fleet? ;o)
Rob Bell

Andy surely you replaced your hood at Silverstone the year before last - or is this something you do every year?

Cheers

While we're on the subject of hoods... I notice the Blue soft-top on my new TF would appear to be double layered as the inside is black and the outside obviously blue. It also feels thicker than the standard black roof as I remember on my old F. Just wondering if anyone with a TF and a black roof could have a look to see if that is still a single layer. That's to say I was always under the impression the roof was a single layer anyhow. :)

Hi Rob,

Family is great.

Considering getting another MG (the new TF looks good in the flesh - or should that be metal?). Not just yet though.

Many thanks for the replies... I will try and find the B&G web site and contact details and go from there.

Dieter, I think the front screen frame seals have been replaced already. Is there any way of confirming if the seals I have are the old style or the new improved ones?

I have direct experience of new hoods from both B&G and Mike Satur.

IMO, it's Mike all the way with hoods.

The B&G item was a bad fit and they'd butchered the frame to get the new cover on.

Beware!

Chris

Great
that wasnt what i wanted to hear, i am driving up there on friday to have one fitted, anyone else any experience with B&G was this a one off (fingers crossed) mine is already paid for :0(
Nick Walters

Sorry Nick,

I can only tell you my experience.

Could be a one off. I did actually give them chance to fix it, but the problem got worse. Also transpired that they did not know there was a difference between the Mk1 and Mk2 hood! It is mentioned now in the catalogue and I believe it was from my dealings with them this all came up.

Chris

Had my new hood fitted on Friday all seems well a very nice hood and the rear screen zip is a lot easier to use, (i dont have to fight with loose bits of cotton to undo it) took longer than expected to fit it, but anyone thinking of going, there is an ok pub about 100yds away called the white hart, nice lunches :0)

only problem is i cant put it down for a few days apparently i need to let it settle, so i dont know what the folding mechanism is like :0)
Nick Walters

Chris, I think you are right about B&G their supplier when you had your problems(a couple of years ago?) was not making the hood correct much to your disatisfaction from what I can remember(and rightly so) I discused your problem with Malcom and they have now improved the design as Nick has found out.The fitting is down to the individual however and this can vary of course.Don't understand the settling bit though, once fitted it is fitted. Nick?
Chris don't forget you owe me a picture of your Trophy hood, the light had gone when we fitted it,LOL.
Mike.

Hi Mike,

They said something about the tension in the hood settling down as it is very tight (may just be my car took a long time to fit), and they said it wasnt good to keep folding it within a few days of it being fitted?? im not worried anyway as long as this weather keeps up and it doesnt rain as soon as i put it down.. :0)
