MG MGF Technical - new MEMS ?

Hi,

It could be that I need to order a new MEMS/ECU (ignition problem) for my F (MPi, 1998), so my questions:
- Which one do I need to order (full description and/or partnumber) ?
- Any idea how much this Xmas present will cost ?

I would like to have the same one as before, not the newer one fitted on the MkII (could cause problems while the cat is missing, etc... ;-)

Gracias,
Erik

Doohh !
Now they gave in and assume on a faulty MEMS ECU ?

May be the option to upgrade to an Emerald ECU ;)
An option could be as well http://www.atpelectronics.demon.co.uk/
Other partnumbers are @ http://www.mgfcar.de/mems1.9/index.htm

Dont forget the breakers at Midlands. I think anyone will add the link here

Sorry about this trouble. You will miss a lot of cash for spending instead to the *dark side* this year.

So if the ingnition is failing by the ECU/MEMS another programmable chip bypassing the ECU could solve the problem as well, and could cope with other *future* tuning mods.

In other words, an Icon* could save me from some troubles.

Off course I need to find someone who can properly program the unit for our car.

Is this above all correct ?

Thanks,
Erik

* or Emerald, ...

Hi Eric,
sorry to hear about the continous trouble with the car.. Below are some hints as I have been in contact with one person over here with similare fault.
Write down the numbers from the "faulty" ECU as well as year and VIN from Your car. Aproach some of the mentioned breaker sources and get a good ECU at a fraction of the dealer cost. Now You need a good dealer who has and can use the "Test-Book" computer. This because the old bought unit has to be re-programmed with security code to match Your existing system etc. This is no big deal - a decent technican can do that under 1 hour of labour and at the same time do a helth-test (injectors, starter; electric windows,fuelpump,SRS-system,coils et.al.while connected to the vehicle.
IMO it is most important that the existing ignition-coils are found to be OK. Otherwise this might in short time ruin the new ECU. Do not at any circumstance leave the old ECU at the dealer ! It is Your possession and can be checked for faulty drivers for the ignition coils, fuelpump etc. This unit is a pig to open but there are firms that do this work and replace components to make it work again.Usually it is the driver transistors that are shot or temperature dependent. This repair do NOT change security codes so no need for a new "Test-Book" session, just a swap over.If You intend ( as me) to keep the car for a very long period it could be a benefit to have an extra working ECU on the shelf....
Just a few thoughts around the situation, hope everything works out fine!

Thanks for the replies, ... but still no new MEMS needed (knocking on wood).

We're been playing with a (British) Porsche Boxster on Friday (exceeding 210km/h again, and the Porsche getting further away, fun) and some fast accelerations on Saturday and Sunday, even slowly cruising (in front of our friends in a Saxo 1.1) didn't caused the problem again. It disappeared since we fitted a new battery.

Anyway, it could appear next time, so I'll try to remember all the good advice, thanks again.

The ICON will not replace the MEMS, it is an addition, so it would not have cured the problem.
The Emerald system is a complete replacement system, it costs about £400 (about the same as the MEMS) and can be programmed at home, it alows access to sensor readings, adds tuning capability and can be set to work with the alarm ECU.

Erik
if you are going to need another Mems, I have a spare one from a standard '98 (Elise) engine that I might sell you.
mail me if you want it .
