MG MGF Technical - New or used starter motor
Thanks to the archive I managed to get my starter motor to work by applying a gentle tap with a length of timber. According to the breakdown chap who arrived after this breakthrough said it could mean it's on its way out. The contacts, he said, were free of corrosion. This is the first time the motor has failed to turn when starting, and has not happened since. What's the prognosis ? Should I change it now ? I will have to replace the F within 12 months (to avoid selling with an intergalactic mileage) so I am loathe to plonk brand new MGR sourced parts on if I can help it. Is it worth going for a used or reconditioned part if such a thing is obtainable ? |

Although the starter motor itself can be expensive, the worn parts such as brushes, solenoid and drive can be purchased seperately from Rover and replaced with a little DIY knowledge. Midland MGF will be able to source you a second hand unit and you could try your local Motor Factors for a reconditioned unit. |

the solenoid is the problem, by hitting it you are releasing a sticking solenoid. |

>the solenoid is the problem, ... and herein almost the contacts. No need to dismantle the whole starter, but get off the solenoid only. Some solder works required and cleaning the contacts let the part survive for another load of miles. (IMO) Dieter PS. I know I have pix of a dismantled solenoid anywhere. Arrgh.. need to them :) |

If you are no good at DIY the Solenoid is replaceable. VVC part no: BAU 5703 £84.62 inc VAT MPi part No: BAU 5444 £92.68 inc VAT |
