MG MGF Technical - Noise Management

Anti Noise is a device I saw once on Tomorrows World as a young boy. You just need a microphone and some speakers, and then just switch it on. This would be most useful on those long motorway Winter journeys, hood up. When you want to change your roadster into being a quiet place on the inside. Just flick the switch and glide along in silence, or should I say, driving along minus every monotone drone you get once settled on the motorway. A soundwave is sampled through the microphone, and then a computer inverts the signal and sends it through the six speaker stereo system in phase with the original soundwave so that peaks in the soundwave are cancelled out by troughs in the inversion, and vice versa.

Well, there we are then, that solves that one.

yes, but where is the production version?

You can get active engine mounts which do the same job, but use the engine as the speaker cone

Check out the BOSE (I think it's them) head phones; my brother tried a demo pair on a flight to LA and thought they were great but expensive.

I spend a lot of time contemplating the inside of my helmet (snarf snarf) so got a pair of made to measure ear defenders (plugs). I've used them in the car, roof up and down, still listen to music and even hear the wife telling me to slow down. I've even used them in the office when in the throws of a calamity and filtered out noist users leaving me able to head fellow experts! All for about £65.

That should be throes not throws. After that it went down hill as I couldn't hear the keyboard clicking. Believe me, I did not attempt to 'head' fellow experts.

Hi all,

the SAAB 340 turbo-prop. commuter has that function on some number of planes. It is amazing how well it functions, a speaker grille near each seat gives "anti-phase" soundwaves to cancel out disturbing engine sound. If one places a bag or similare close to that opening there is a hughe diff. in sound level! As sprinter mentioned those padded head phones are a relief - best use is when trying to get some sleep...
Maybee someone has experience from servicing jet-fighters? Here also a kind of noise-canceling system is used in the head-phone type of intercomms. In use allready when we had the Hawker Hunter over here...
Oh those memories ;o)
