MG MGF Technical - noise whilst idling when hot.
Hi I have a 2001 mgf and i am getting a noise which seems to arise once the engine is hot. I can only describe it as a raspy rattley sound which stops as soon as I push the clutch in. Its under warranty so i am going to get Rover to have a look but I was wondering if any of you mechanical whizzes' had any ideas? Cheers, Chris |

Sounds like a Clutch Thrust Bearing but I may be wrong. |

Probably as Mr. Jamieson suggested, but could be transmission bearing noise. |

Hello, I put a post up a few weeks ago as I have exactly this same problem. I'm taking the car in for its 25,000 service on Friday, so hopefully they'll fix it for me then. You are right, when the engine is at operating temperature and the car is idling, there is a very definite rattle coming from the engine bay, which stops when you push the clutch in. I'm not too sure, but it seems to be getting louder lately. I'll let you know what they say when I see them on Friday. My car is a November 2001 1.8i. regards, |

Clutch release bearing if it just clatters a bit that's ok, called clutch chatter. if it's squealing then its got to come out. If your car is warranted get them to do it now ! |

Hello, Well, I just got the car back from its 25k service today. In relation to the rattling sound we're all talking about, they said that it was coming from the gearbox, and that when they changed the gearbox oil, it stopped. I'm not particularly up on the 'ins and outs' of how cars work, so I'm not too sure how this factors into the equation. Either way, there's no noise now, so whatever they did fixed it. regards, |

thanks for the advice... :) |

I have this too but this is clutch clatter indeed and af far as I know many cars have it. No problem I guess? |
