MG MGF Technical - Noisy CAT?

My MGF is a 1996 VVC, fitted with its original exhaust etc.

Recently the noise has increased greatly when starting from cold. I have checked the exhaust and all appears okay from the outside, but....what seems to be the CAT at the rear of the box has a split "case."

It looks like the bottom of the casing which should be crimped together, has rotted away and is causing the vibration when cold.

I would appreciate any suggestions / advice...Do I need a new CAT, or can a replacement "Casing" be purchased? Is it better to purchase a whole new exhaust / system and if so what is the best type?

Many thanks.

Hi Andy,

Since none of the technical gurus on the board have anwered, I will have a try!

I would have thought that a split CAT is an MoT failure and will therefore need to be replaced at some point.

At least you appear to have time to check out cheap alternatives (well less expensive...).

I seem to remember that B&G to replacment CATs and am sure Mike Satur can also help.

Good luck

I think if the thread survives some days until all the regular get back from hol's it might be an option to get a second hand good one from guys who changed to 'somemething else'

Location 'West Midlands' ?
Would this be an option ?

Second hand catalyst mechanical conditions can easy be checked. IMO

Anyway, a new one needs not be bought at MGR. I got for mine a 200 cells metal catalyst. Fullfills all the emmission tests, was cheaper and should last ages, I hope.

I had a similar problem a while ago, and it caused me to lose power at the most inconvinient of times. I bought a bypass pipe from Mike Satur, and had it fitted - and it's great. I also bought a new CAT from

in readiness for my next MOT!

Dieter,

what's that "200 cells" cat ?
We never know, I maybe should have to look for a cat soon.
I'll have a look tomorrow, 'cos for a few days, my '97 F sounds louder, esp. above 4500 rpm, and I *feel* I loose power, altough not sure since the speed seems to be as usual ;o)
My first guess is that my SP exhaust has loose "pipes" inside, because I can hear some vibrations that are probably coming from there.
(BTW, I have the Rover exhaust bracket fitted)
Other possible causes : flexi pipe (5 years old...), or catalyst (quite exposed as now, my F is too low @ 310mm ride height).

Did anyone else follow Jules' link to British Car Parts?

£109 for an MGF cat sounds like a good buy

Many thanks for your comments....If I am going to replace the CAT, would it be best to upgrade the exhaust system as well? (There are many exhausts listed in the archives, which is the best?)

Brian, I did use the link and yes it seems a very good price!! Has anyone else used a CAT from this company?

Regards.

Andy,

I have this problem aswell. I thinkn from what you are sating, it is simply the braided steel mesh which wraps around the CAT. I was thinking of using a few Jubilee clips and putting them around the mesh. This should hopefully crimp the mesh to the CAT and stop the rattling. It doesnt sound like the actual CAT is knackered, so it seem a waste to replace the whole unit. As far as i can work out the steel braiding simpley protects the CAT unit from stones etc??
