MG MGF Technical - Noisy Tappets Part 2

I posted a couple of weeks ago about suspected noisy tappets and I was pointed in the direction of a bottle of sticky tappet stuff.

Chucked that in to see how it went....

Now a few weeks later the noise has changed. It's now almost like a rasping sound that only occurs between 1800 - 2500 RPM in any gear and only in this range.

Hoping its not the cam bolt.

Thoughts please!

Leak from the exhaust manifold? I had something similar - the engine was down on power at the same time...

Might also be a leaking flexipipe - but the 'tappetty' nature of the sound I think would fit with the 'phut phut' noise often associated with gas blowing past the exhaust gasket...

Only at those revs?
Bob Millar

It was certainly more noticible from low - mid range rpm Bob... Something worth investigating?

A similar noise can be a poor prognostic sign on a VVC though: can be indicative of one of the VVC cam bolts working loose... :o(

So is it more likely to be an exhaust manifold gasket failure or the manifold itself?
Bob Millar

In my case, in fact what had happened was one of the exhaust manifold studs had worked its way loose, so the clamping on the gasket was inadequate to prevent gas leakage.

Other clues as to what was happening was the presence of exhaust gas inside the engine bay (you could smell it and sometimes see whisps of exhaust smoke). Became very obvious what was happening when the engine inspection cover was removed and the engine started.

Can't be sure whether this is the same problem you've got Bob, but it is certainly something worth investigating.
