MG MGF Technical - Noisy wipers???

My wipers are making a hell of a racket, What is the cause? Is it the motor or the linkage.

Where can I get a new/old unit from in Derbyshire?

Anyone breaking an MGF in the area?

My wifes "W" reg MGF wipers have just died on her, the left one slowed up, then the right one crashed into it, now they wont even start up !...only had the car for 2 weeks...it's covered on the warranty, but not really the point !...has this happened to anyone else ?

I'm sure there have not been too many cases of wipers dieing in 2 weeks but they would have been fixed under warranty - any car part can fail even when new.

However, your wifes car is W reg, NOT 2 weeks old, and is under warranty: isn't that what a warranty is for? Think yourself lucky - if you had bought it new then you would now be paying out for a new wiper blade.

MS starts at £45, MGF Centre also a possibility ...

but the guy has a warranty so doesn't even have to pay!

John, Your right in what you say, it just doesn't fill yourself with confidence about a car costing £9500 & has just had it's 36000mile service...if she'd have bought it new, she wouldn't be paying out for a new motor, it's far more likely to have been given straight back to the dealers.

I actually do understand your viewpoint - even worse if you consider that it is really an £18000 car even if wear and tear and depreciation have taken their toll.

Did the wipers work when you collected the car? Have they worked during the past 2 weeks? I ask because the Service Schedule is a bit hazy on wiper motors - if the arms move back and forth without too much noise then it would probably pass muster.

>>it's far more likely to have been given straight back to the dealers<<

Isn't this what you are about to do under warranty anyway? Even on a new car the dealer would have the option of replacing or repairing the part; a replacement vehicle is not that easy to get.

I bought my F used, with a hardtop fitted. It took me a few days to take it off and check the softtop to discover a split in the screen and a broken zip. The dealer sorted it out the very next day under warranty and also replaced the door lock when it failed 3 months later.

I've since had 18 months of enjoyable motoring in the Uk and in France but at the cost of a failed catalyst and exhaust silencer - not bad for a 1996 car.

It's getting collected today to have the wipers sorted, we've been in contact with an MG garage & they said, from the description my wife gave them, it sounds like the connecting rod has broken & this has been known to happen before, they told her there shouldn't be anything to worry about...she just wants to be able to get it back on the road where it belongs !
