MG MGF Technical - Non return oil filter

Hi,

Could anyone confirm if the MGF has a special oil filter that prevents the oil from draining back into the sump when the engine is switched off ?

If so, a part number would be a great help !

Thanks

The filter itself for sure doesn't.

Most oil filters have a non return valve in them. The old unipart filter was GFE26 although my preference is for GFE36.

Thanks.

Russ, I think that there may be some information in the MGF archives regarding up-rated oil filters, that may have an oil-return valve.

How's your engine rebuild coming along?

Russ, isn't your filter 'remote'? if so why dont you just mount it with the screw upwards - instant non-return via gravity?

Hi,

The standard Rover OE filter GFE280 and the Premium filter GFE26 (I hope I have that the right way round) do have a neoprene anti-drain valve in the body, as does the Fram equivalent. I know because I've cut the devils open, a messy and sometimes bloody job.

I can't confirm that the Rover filter now supplied by Cat, part no RLPW100180, has the same valve as I have yet to cut one open, but I'll sell my MG and take up Morris dancing if it doesn't.

Morris Garage dancing I trust Kes?

I'll get me coat.

Rob,
I think i'd give you a B for effort, but and F for acheivment ;-)

Kes, don't be so sure about the drainback valve. I have recently had big problems with drainback on my B - turns out that both Unipart and Champion have changed the spec of their drainback valves and it no longer works (Unipart now even refuse to call it an anti-drainback valve). I have resorted to new-old stock Coopers (Fram) filters until the matter is fully resolved. Not so important on the F because if memory serves the filter is horizontal so at worst you would only loose half a filter of oil. On the B it's inverted, so you loose the whole lot!

I thought it conjured some very interesting images Will ;o) Very Glastonbury...

An update.

I stupidly didn't look at this thread since my last post but managed to find via a different route the GFE 280 filter (as suggested by Kes). I have it in front of me and it looks just the job. Under the 6 small holes in the top is a neoprene(?) ring that seals the filter.

> a messy and sometimes bloody job

Yes! I cut myself disecting a Fram filter once.

> How's your engine rebuild coming along?

Hi Rob. Almost done now, hope to start her up this weekend. I found 2 bent inlet valves as well 2 exhaust valves so that delayed things for a short while..

> Russ, isn't your filter 'remote'? if so why dont you just mount it with the screw upwards - instant non-return via gravity?

Will, I don't think this will work as my filter is quite high and the syphoning effect will draw the oil out.

Thanks for the help.

Russel,

If the drainback valve is particularly important to you and you can, test the filter before installing. Easiest way is to fill the filter with oil, find a bolt to seal the large inner threaded hole (the outlet) and invert the filter over a bucket overnight to see if it leaks. The Unipart and Champion filters I tried on my B also had the valve visible through the inlet holes, it just didn't seal enough to stop the oil draining out (and that was thick 20w/50).

Tim,

I might try that if I have time.

Will report if I do..

The drainback valve is quite important to me because I have a 4 litre oil swirl pot (Caterham Apollo tank) that will probably empty down to the top connection with no drain back.

Hi,

I was just confirming that the filters had an anti-drainback valve, I can't say whether they work or not! My F gives a little rattle on cold startup, so perhaps not 100% is the answer.
