MG MGF Technical - Nov VVC Head Removal

Hi all,

I have decided to do the 'Exploritary Head Work' on my F myself to see what damage has been done by the cambelt tensioner snapping!!!

Does anyone have any instructions........deiter maybe you have some???? on head removal and refitting???? and timescales???

undo from alternate ends working in diagonals and inwards.

when the bolts are loose do not move the crank. get a thick piece of wood (as deep as the head) and take some notches out of it in line with the bolts in the head. then clamp the cylinder liners down by doing up the head bolts using the wood as an "alternate head". once this is done you can rotate the crank, if you do not do this the liners will shift and destroy their seals when the crank moves.

Will, thanks very much for the advice, I was worried about doing that, i had been warned the wood is a great idea!!!

and a damn site cheaper than the rover tools.
Will Munns

by coincidence :)
Got another cheapish solution from Jon Fredheim two days ago.

Cut piece from cam belt, bend U-shape. wrap together with cable ties.
shift in place and knock in a thin piece of wood.

The ultimate Norwegian Emergency Cam Locking Tool :)

I did cam locking using a cutoff of u section iron, but it suffered as I expect this version to...

it locks fine for forward or reverse movement of both cams, but fails to lock well against one going forward and one back.

cam locking tools are quite cheap

In the Draper catalogue for a couple of quid - worth purchasing IMO.

Anyone got a good crank locking solution?
Rob Bell

one question, if my cam belt has slipped off/snapped...............do i need to lock the cams??? As they are already out of time etc surely i only have to lock them when i reassemble the engine?......??

Going to start pulling the bits off this afternoon!!!!

yup, don't rotate the engine or cams till the two are apart and the liners are clamped.

You should clamp the cams before reinsert, you can do this without the cam locking tool by using two 10mm spanners clamped together. If you don't thgen it is a real ar*e to do realign the cams in the car because they are on a elbow point, where they want to spring forward or back, and you have no visiability of the alignment marks.

Done quite a bit but bought the male torqx not the female one so cant get the head off today!!! Doh!!!
