MG MGF Technical - Of dented alloys and punctured rear screens...

Hi

Following Saturday's visit to TechSpeed, I've been having a proper look over the F, having ignored her a bit over the winter.

Problem 1 - one of the alloys has a tiny chip out of it at the rim. It's not visible unless you're quite close up, but it does lose pressure at approximately 1psi per day, so I have to repressurise the tyre twice a week or so. Is there any way of plugging it up, until I either get a replacement 15" or a nice set of 16" rims?

Problem 2 - a tiny crack in the rear screen is slowly spreading. Again, is there anything I can do (better than the current sellotape) to plug it up till I find a decent replacement screen on eBay?

Problem 3 - post Christmas I find I cannot afford a sports exhaust, front spoiler or 52mm throttle body. The exhaust can obviously be replacated by taking a screwdriver to the silencer; any other bright ideas? :-)

Cheers,
Jamie

Problem 2 - a £20-£30 Cat Bypass might get you the roar your after..
... or at least as far as a smile on your face.

Could Problem 1 be the tyre and not the alloy?

Jamie - As Neil says problem 1 is quite likely to be the tyre not the wheel. However if the chip out of the rim is not too bad the wheel can be refurbished very successfully for about £50 per wheel. I have just had some of mine done and the results are better than the original wheels were. The company I have used is Pristine in Woburn Sands www.pristinealloywheels.co.uk tele 01908 282628 but I am sure there are others around

Hi all

The chaps at TS hought the problem was the wheel rather than the tyre (I've no idea myself!). I may have found someone breaking a 1.8i with the right wheels, so can probably pick up a new(ish) rim for not a lot. Will know more when my ridiculous school firewall lets me back onto eBay at 3:30pm...

I'll try the aquarium sealant for now, Mel; thanks! My whole hood is beginning to show its age, so I might hang on till I can find a cheap complete hood.

Cat bypass - hmm, tempting. I also might have found a used Daytona, though, which would certainly do the job!

...or, if it is a crack, greenhouse repair tape can be used as a 'temporary' measure. Better than cellotape, as it does not go yellow and brittle.
