MG MGF Technical - Oil Additives

Anyone had any experience of the engine oil additive Prolong ! ?
Robert.
R J Hemphill

Robert, I'd never heard of it before your query. I googled for PROLONG (expecting the worst!) and found their interesting site http://www.prolong.uk.com/

I'll be interested to read any answers you get.

I too trawled the Internet and found this :-
http://www.ftc.gov/opa/1999/09/prolong.htm

IMO Steer clear, MG requests you don't use additives anyway IIRC

"The patent also states that Prolong is:
51.5% chlorinated parrafins
31% aromatic solvent
15.5% mineral oil
1% mineral spirits
1% calcium sulfonate"

Chlorinated hydrocarbons react with water to form PCBs
which may be a health risk. I would avoid this type of product.

...then the money saved can be invested in a really good engine oil such as Mobil 1...
David S

David,

Agree with that 99% of time, although I have a slight concern over M1 at moment, although still a good engine oil. The concern being the possible replacement/replaced of ester additive with AN which although also a true synth IMO is not as good as an ester, but also not as costly.

If this is true then I would consider alternatives such as Silkolene, Motul Redline and possibly Castrol, if looking for a high performance oil.

yes but I can't buy the 3 you named for 18 quid for 4 litres in France...
David S

David,

Avoiding paying money to Gordon Brown which is a total waste of money is top priority.
