MG MGF Technical - Oil leak ?

Now that i have cleared out my garage and started parking my F in there i have noticed that an oil patch has appeared (not a huge puddle but enough to worry about) it is about half way up the car and pretty central. Any ideas on what is leaking and how serious it is ??

Cheers,

Nik

Are you sure it's oil?
The only thing I can think of half way up the car and central is coolant. Check the coolant pipes underneath the car and make sure they are not leaking, as this can mean disaster if not caught. Make sure you don't go under the car using just a jack though!!

If its coolant it'll taste sweet. Thou I am not recommending this as I don't want to get sued on a no claim no win job, if you keel over and die!

ok I will try to take a look tonight what am I looking for to check the coolant pipes ?

Thanks

Leaks ? :-p

Nik, i seem to have a simlar problem. From what you say it seems to be coming from the same area. However mine is definately coolant leaking as apposed to oil. I hope its just a loose or split pipe that can be replaced as there isnt much leaking out. The differance between oil and coolant on the ground should be pretty obvious though, even without havng to taste it.

I think mine is actually oil, I will have a good taste tonight to check ;-)

Yeah well just remember I didn't advise you to go sticking your tongue in dirty places!

Hi guys

Sorry, we are a bit busy here at work at present but look in the archive for corroded coolant pipes (be a bit creative). There was plenty of references of a known area of "wear & tear"; MS sells "better" replacements.
I believe Diters site will have instructions/details for this job.

If I get some time, or get bored tonight, I shall try to track something down for you.

Had a quick search of archive: "coolant leak" "this phrase" seems a good starting point.

Rob Bell may also be able to point in right direction as he, this past weekend, "Also took the opportunity .... including the precautionary purchase of his ali cooling pipes"

If it does turn out to be oil, try the dipstick seal especially if you are using synthetic or semi synth oil as this can easily get past the gasket.
