MG MGF Technical - oil temp gauge

Can anybody advise?
1.8i y2k car, 16,000 miles (nise& easy). Oil temp gauge runs just over 120 and the fans run on afetr the engine is switched off is this right.
Malcolm

Yes, but it's likely that your car has a faulty temperature sensor. It's a common problem on early Y2K cars, look into the archive.

What's the normal temperature your car runs on?
Should be around 90 degrees celcius. I only reached 120 degrees after running at 225km/h for awhile.

On a slightly different tack....

The fuel gauge "pointer indicates the fuel level, even when the starter switch is turned off", according to the owner's manual.

However, when I was lent a TF135 for a 24 hour test drive, the fuel gauge read just under half (ignition off) when the paperwork was being completed.

"You're OK for fuel", the smiling salesman assured me, pointing to the gauge, so I didn't check when I started up and moved off. It was only later when I was waiting in a queue, that I noticed the pointer was in the red sector. Faulty gauge, thinks I, and told the MGR dealer on returning the car.

HOWEVER, the EXACT same thing happens with my new TF160. When the fuel is below half-way, the needle settles at the half-way mark, when the ignition is off. Hey, it may even settle there when the tank is full; I haven't checked that!!

Is this a purely TF peculiarity??
SimonKE

Simon, I had no problems with my F's fuel gauge.

Get is checked out.

>HOWEVER, the EXACT same thing happens with my new TF160.

I think it gets updated when the ignition gets switched on - did the dealer have a piece of pipe in his hand, did he smell of petrol ;-?
Will Munns

Still runs at 120 deg after replacement sensor fitted,
whats next?
Malcolm

Which sensor did you replace? There are two, one for the MEMS and one for the gauge.

Look in the archives of this section for the thread 'Oil temperature on 2000MY VVC'. Note Roger Parker's comments. Search the other threads and you will find this has been raised many times.

Hope this helps

Will, you're right, that is what happens in reality**. But that is contrary to what the manual says.

>> I had no problems with my F's fuel gauge

Hanah, p'raps it's peculiar to the TF....??

**As this is what happens in most other cars and what I've been "brought up" to expect, there is no real problem with the TF's behaviour.

Thanks Bruce and everyone else for your comments and specially your advise to look through previous threads.

Mal,

Another way to check your oil temp gauge would be to call in at your local MOT Testing station and ask them to measure the oil temp with their own sensor. They put it down the dipstick tube when doing an MOT so that they can run the oil temp up to temperature before taking the readings. I suggest you prewarm the engine with a run before hand. You can then compare their reading with yours at the same time.

My 1999 MPI is also running between 110-125 Deg.C. Always. No problems!
Even if I do 170 km/h for a long time.

And Hannah Kim, 225?!? Dont think so... (My speedometer is off by 15 km/h when pointing to 180km/h)
