MG MGF Technical - oil temperature
With only a month left of the 3 year warranty the oil temperature gauge reaches 150 at constant speeds of 80+. Main dealer has no idea of what to do. Any advice would be appreciated |

John.... Cant provide a solution but as an indicator ( and Im sure many more will follow ) my temp never goes above 100 and that is even going an extremely long drive mostly at high speed. 1995 MPI 45k miles. |

Is this a new thing, or has it always done that? I think that F's have differed in the setup of the gauges so that some read different from others. However, 150 does seem high to me (I get to indicated '130' if I really flog it). |

all your temps are high, mine never shows above 80 even if i thrash it it only show just above 80. is there somthing wrong with mine? |

John, early MY2000 cars had a 'fault' in the wiring circuit causing inaccurately 'high' oil temperature readings. This may be the case with your car? As asked before, how old is your car? Which model is it? Has it always done this? Under what conditions does the oil reach this temperature? Basically, if that oil temperature is correct, it is way too high. If 150 at idle, then I'd lay bets that this was a simple sensor/wiring/gauge problem rather anything amiss with the engine. |

Hi John, there is a MG-Rover technical bulletin about it (my car is the same age 2/2000). The dealer has to solder a capacitor somewhere. This was done to my car summer of 2000. Before my gauge read always 135, going up to "beeeeep" (Oil temp warning sound) when I drove > 190km/h. Now it's reading 120 (<160 km/h) and 140 when I have 6900 rpm in fifth for a longer time (Germany only ;-). Cheers, Ingo P.S.: IIRC, the beep is unique to the VVC. |

Hi John Like Rob said early my2000 cars had a fault causing the oil temp reading to be high. My car was showing very high readings for about the last 12 months and caused me some consternation espicially at high speeds. Coincidentally, a week before the warranty expired the car had HGF so check it out thoroughly before your car is 3 years old. I was also informed by the MGR garage who undertook the warranty work and 3 year service that they would not have entertained a post warranty claim if the car had had a HGF a week or so later and I had gone eslewhere for the service. It may be tempting to look eslewhere for the 3 year service but take my advice and don't - maybe at 4 years. David |

It is the second 1.8i owned from new and there has never been a problem before. With 33k on the clock the car runs well and the problem has only occured over the last month. Where it is possible to hold a contstant speed of 80+ the gauge quickly moves up to 150 but reduces to 130 after dropping back to 70mph. No warning light appears. Just had the car serviced at the main dealer who thought it might be the fan but a fast run brought about the problem again. Need to resolve quickly as who wants to drive at 70mph! The dealer has agreed to contact Rover's technical department. |

Same thing : the oil temperature gauge reaches 150 at constant speeds of 80+. Sometimes it even reaches 170... My F is MY2000. It always done that. 3 dealers have tried to fix it but never succeeded. The warranty end in a few month. I'm desesperate to find someone to fix it. I've heard of a good dealer in the north of France but it would make a long way to go... I'm very very upset by this problem. I have to slow down on motorways under the legal limit and i have always the doubt of a possible HGF. I've contacted MG Rover France, they never responded. Why i am not surprised ? ;((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( |

john & Arnaud: I've been experiencing EXACTLY the same problem with my MY2000 1.8mpiF. please look in the archives typing "oil temperature" as a phrase and a lot of posts will come up with answers to the same problem. Like Ingo says -who helped me back then to cure my F!-Thanks Man!-it is a simple job to do. You will just have to solder a small resistance to bring the temp reading where its supposed to be! Dieters' Excellent *The MGF Bible* site has a whole section of tips and diagrams to solve the high temp problem : http://www.mgf-net.de/ and look for "Oel Temp MY2000" in the "MGF Know How section" Hope this helps! Happy Driving! Cheers Theodossis |

Thank you Theodossis. I already read these posts but : 1 : i'm a complete idiot in mechanic :-( 2 : If there is a problem with the car (ie HGF) and the dealer discovers i had modified something, the warranty wont work. That's why i want an official dealer. |

The problem is resolved by fitting a resistor in th sensor lead. The technical service people at MGR know the problem well. Ihad this on my 2000 VVC after about 6 months. Why it took six months to show I don't know but with the mod it's been fine since. More details in th archives. |
