MG MGF Technical - Oil Temperatures

I wonder if anyone can help me, took my MGF VVC Abingdon for a reasonably long run yesterday. On the motorway once cruising for a while I noticed the oil temp getting slowly above 120 C.

Eased back on the throttle and the temp dropped, don't think there is a problem with it but just curious as to normal oil temps on other cars whilst driving at motorway speeds.

Any help/advice you can give greatly appreciated.

My 2001 Steptronic is usually around 120 for normal driving in summerish temperatures. I have noticed sustained high speed might cause the temp to go up slightly but it soon drops back again when you ease up. I think (hope) this is normal.

Today I have been using my 98 VVC on the track. The oil temp went to the middle of the dial but as soon as I returned to the pits and sat at idle the temp went back to normal around the 70 mark. My old 2001 1.8mpi always used to go to the 120's once the engine warmed, it can be cured by fitting a resistor to the electrical circut.

On the second lap of the "Ring", my oil temp went into the red and the warning light came on, a minute of cruising got it back to a more reasonable level :-)

how hard is an oil cooler to fit to a trophy ?

Fairly easy - but you need to decide between an air cooled radiator versus a coolant-cooled one :o)

My F normally sits at around 70 degrees. On the way to Castle Combe Sunday night it went up to 90 degrees when I was stuck in traffic on the M4. On track it also got up to 90 degrees. My car is fitted with an air cooled oil radiator below the normal radiator.

My first F used to get up to around 140 degrees when driven hard on semi-synth 10w40. When I was running it on 0w40 fully synth it never went above 120 degrees.
