MG MGF Technical - One Key Fob Works, Other doesnt!
I had trouble as the Key Fob on my MGF (1998) was not working. I changed the battery but it has made no difference. The spare fob does work however. I have tried unlocking with the key then trying to lock with the broken fob, but it doesnt want to know. Any ideas much appreciated. |

Graham, Lifted from the FAQ pages..... Reset the key fob:- Remove the batteries Press both buttons on the hand set for 5 seconds. This discharges the capacitor in the Fob. Fit new batteries Press the lock button 5-6 times to resyncronise the fobs. Hope this helps. Sam |

Graham If Sam's advice doesn't do it, you need a new fob casing. Available from any MGR or Land Rover dealer priced at £3.70 ish. The buttons were stuck on mine and since replacement, everything works fine. TH |

Thanks for your input. I have tried what Sam kindly suggested but it doesnt help. The buttons do seem to "click" OK so do you think I would still need a new fob casing ? Appreciate your help Graham |

Mine clicked as well, but made a poor contact. In short, they wear. |

Graham This is not MGF fob experience, but from another make of car. I had an intermittent fault on a fob and found five soldered joints on the printed circuit had come adrift. Presumably these can break when dropped. I soldered these up and the unit worked perfectly and went with car when sold. Worth a look... Pete |

I've got the same problem with my MGF, took it to caffyns who replaced the casing and the battery and then re-set as guided above, but it is still a it iffy, I know that on other threads people have advised to fiddle around under the dash on the passengers side, where the foot light is to increase the range of the fob. not sure how though |

I have had a problem with my fob recently and after opening it up and taking the circut board out I found one of the buttons to be loose. My solution was to solder the 4 connectors on the button, it was a bit fiddly but worked a treat. Don't forget to take out the battery while soldering. Ian W. |
