MG MGF Technical - One shot electric window switches

On the TFs (and Fs?), you've got a one shot press and release switch that winds the drivers side window down in one.
Is it possible to modify the passenger switch to do the same? Is a it a new switch or a box of tricks that plugs onto the existing switch? Where can I get one to put on mi motor and how much will it cost? Why does a brown cow give white milk when it only eats green grass? (last question not essential to be answered0

Rob Bell should be able to answer your question. I remember that he fitted a one shot window circuit to his 96F. Check the archives?

>>On the TFs (and Fs?), you've got a one shot press and release switch<<

probably only since about MY2000 - before that we had a choice of how far down.

Search the archive for
"DEI 530T window module (one touch etc.)"
or
"Fabrice window delay" (all words).

You'll find Fabrice fitted a fairly cheap DEI 530T module to his car.
I was looking at this, I think it was about 30 quid.

Out of this you can not only get one touch windows, but you can also get automatically winding windows when alarmed.
and.. I think automatically windows down windows if you want.

Rob's got it covered as usual - see

You can get the ECO (YWC-106170) from Victoria at the MGFCentre for a very reasonable sum. All you need then is a few bits of wire and connectors. The job is real simple with Rob's wiring diagram - even I managed it and when it comes to electrics, I'm useless.

I'm just waiting now for Rob to sort out the wiring diagram for the passenger side window (different colour wires), then I'll buy another ECU and sort that one out.
Dave

Does anyone know if the module Fabrice fitted can wind the windows down a fraction when you open the door and then up again when you shut it? Always seem to get a better seal between the window and the roof that way and I vaguely remember someone else talking about it as well.

Dave,
Me thinks thats not the link!

Oops - clicked on a jpg to get the properties by mistake. Here's the main page:

Thanks Will,

BTW - "You can get the ECO (YWC-106170)" should read "You can get the ECU" - must learn to check my posts.

Hi Timmeh

Basically, your question has already been answered above - you have two options:

1. Junk your current window lift ECU in favour of the multi-functioned DEI 530T module that Fabrice figured out the installation for. Some details in the archives, but for a complete fitting guide, drop Fabrice an email.

2. Install another window lift ECU as Dave suggests. This does not require that you fit a new switch - rather that the ECU wiring needs to be spliced into the window lift harness.

I'll have a look and sort out the wiring connections this evening. I reckon that the method will be practically identical for both early MGF and for MY2000 MGF and TF, but I'll check this too. :o)

Tim, the unit that Fabrice installed does not have the function to drop the door glass fractionally when the door is opened. I remember chatting to folks when the LR Freelander came out - as this car's rear glass DOES have this function, and presumably has a descrete ECU that could be employed on the F... Perhaps there are Freelander wiring diagrams on the 'net now?
Rob Bell

Tim,

I will have a look too, but can you let me know if you find a unit to do the 'drop a bit' thing. I could really do with this as I always have to drop the drivers window an inch to get a good seal with my hardtop!
Neil H

I've got a feeling that the Freelander version of the RAVE CDs appear on Ebay periodically and will contain wiring diagrams. Worth asking around any owners we know?

Tim.
Tim Jenner

Yes, definitely Tim :o)
Rob Bell

Hmm...sounds like the Freelander system is totally different, relying on signals from the door handles and an electrically activated door lock to ensure the window is dropped before the door can be opened (thanks to David Mills for the info!). I suspect our best bet would be to find out what other cars have this feature - one I know of for the list is the Jag XK8 but I suspect a window lift ECU for one of those would cost more than an F!

Tim, I think that ALL systems that drop the windows on opening the door work in the same fashion - namely though a connection to the door lock mechanism (interior light circuit perhaps?)

The reason for suggesting the LR over any other system is that the electrical systems were designed by the same engineers who came up with the system in the MGF - and hence the idea that there may be a better chance of compatibility with the existing wiring ... (I know I know, it is still a long shot)

How did you have in mind to activate a window drop circuit Tim?

Another car that uses a similar glass-drop system is the Porsche Boxter - and again, it relies on the door handle/ door opening... :o/
Rob Bell

Does anyone know what rover the ECU YWC-106170 was fitted in? ie 200 or 800 series etc
Richard

Tim, the sensor on the F is in the door lock mech, and show the position of the latch, not the position of the door, so this works in the same ways as the freelander.
Will Munns

Richard - I don't know what other models the window ECU (YWC-106170) was installed in - but they are available from MGF (MY2000) and TFs.

If you ask me for an educated guess, I'd say Mk3 R200/ R25/ ZR/ R400/ R45/ ZS

Perhaps anyone with the RAVE or parts manuals handy can comment?

Will - thanks for that confirmation - I thought that was the case...
Rob Bell

F and TF is the only hit on RAVE (2002 edition).
