MG MGF Technical - Open bonnet ??

Quick one ...

How do you open the Bonnet on a new MGF ??

Wheres the lever !!

Thanks

Paul
Paul

Quick answer - in the boot - right hand side.
Dave

Quick question Paul: If it's a new car where is the Owners Handbook? Sometimes the old 'analogue' methods are quicker and/or better than newer 'digital' ones.

You recon you can get to your owners handbook and find the relevnt section in seven minutes and two seconds? I know I couldn't.

Problem: I'm standing by the car wondering how to open the bonnet.

Optional problem: The car is in a layby in the middle of the Yorkshire Moors.

Solution1: Open glovebox, get handbook, look in the index, turn to page, open bonnet.

Solution2: Find a computer, switch it on, connect to BBS, post question, wait for answer, go back to car, open bonnet.
John Ponting

:-)

Will

my car is just outside the office window 12 paces from my desk so I probably could get to the handbook in that time but ...

like most of us, I wouldn't do it during working hours when the pc is running MyIE2 with 6 relevant tabbed websites and the bbs on last posts
John Ponting

Alternativly:

Solution1: Think "arse, where is the handbook, it must be at home", go home (30 mins), search house top to bottom looking for a leather wallet, find leather wallet, search for relevent section.

Solution2: Think "arse, where is the handbook, oh well it's not like I haven't got my AA card"

Solution3: Think "arse, where is the handbook, oh well i'll phone the dealer, lucky there number is on the numberplate"

Solution4: Think "arse, where is the handbook, oh well lucky I am a geek with a mobile and PocketPC(tm) and I can ask questions like this and get an almost instantainous answer"

Solution5: Think "I wonder how to open the bonnet, oh well I ask when I get to work, those internet guys are sure to know"
In fact you name something about it and I bet it's terrible!!

The 'correct' and fastest solution is going to vary on a lot of things, but I don't keep the handbook in the car as it has a nice place to keep that card with the security numbers on in it.
Will Munns

Of course, the relevent handbooks for my 'cars' are getting less and less relevent, but thats another story!

Have to accept this one as very likely - just spent 2 days searching for handbook for the bike, pi$$ed wife off by blaming her for putting it away 'safely', eventually phoned dealer to find that they still had it from last service back in May.

Put security numbers into mobile or PocketPC, leave master @ home and keep book in car

You see, I have enough trouble locating a A5 leather wallet, what do you recon my chances are of finding a credit card size piece of card?

Is it friday yet?
Will Munns

What's this Leather Wallet all about then....my handbook arrived in a naff semi-transparent plastic thinggy....
SimonKE

Yes it is Friday and I'm off for the next 2 weeks.

Note to myself: make sure the handbook is in car as may not be able to access bbs for a while

SimonKE, is yours a TF or an F?
John Ponting

Though you had retired John :-)))

You'll laugh on the other side when your multiple nipples start geting sore!
John Ponting

I grease my nipples, so this doesn't apply to me!
Will Munns

John

Why, mine's a top of the range TF 160, with all the bells & whistles (like only one horn, et cetera...), of course!!!!

So are you hinting that the leather wallet is ANOTHER cost-cutting exercise by MGR????
SimonKE

The original wallet was a leather look-alike but strong.

Ted
Ted Newman

SimonKE, you are kind. I feared you may have suspected me of alluding to "naff semi-transparent plastic thinggy" in the same breath as a TF.

Obviously my views will change next year when we swap the F for a TF :-

NB must remember to hangon to the leather folder when I change car. Even the cheapest Micra comes with a substantial folder for the documents and books.
John Ponting

John

You may have to wait a while longer before ordering your TF..

I just flicked through the brochure and they havent got your custom seat edging design in production yet... :-)

Obviously a special edition !

My TF came with a nice leather folder for the manuals. It even has a stuck on enamel and paint MG logo. Much better than the embossed logo on the F folder. I was looking at both of them last night. The TF has fewer books though, with less full colour photographs.
Neil Courtney

>> My TF came with a nice leather folder for the manuals. It even has a stuck on enamel and paint MG logo....

????? It gets worse...Obviously only the Home market suffers the cutbacks!!

>> The TF has fewer books though, with less full colour photographs....

COLOUR PHOTOS?????? WHAT colour photos?? And I have only ONE book for the car, plus one for the Radio/CD.

What were the other books about, Neil??
SimonKE

It's called "a Brief History of time", never actually read it though
Will Munns

... never had the time Will? ;-)
Scarlet Fever

Actually I am one of the few people who _don't_ own the book and _have_ read it, I even put my hands up to understanding eveything up to the last few chapters, but that was when I was at school, and it seemed like a worth while use of my time.
Will Munns

Simon,
the other ones were the Service history and information (ie. what needs doing when), allthough it did say that the cam belt change was only needed at 160,000km. I crossed this out and added 5 years/60,000km when I sold it last night. There is also a small fold out card with a summary of all of the instruments in the cockpit. I had not noticed that before.

The photos are at the begining of each chapter, and look like they are from the colour sales brouchur. They included the cutaway diagram of a Flame Red VVC in the front of then Technical data section.

Okay Will, explain long string theory to me in words of one syllable or less.

Going back to the original question... The release lever is in the boot on the righthand side. If you are lucky, pulling this will allow the bonnet to spring deftly open. You will now have to walk around to the front of the car and release the safety catch before the bonnet can be fully opened.

If you are unlucky (like me), pulling the lever will have no effect whatsoever.

>Okay Will, explain long string theory to me in words of one syllable or less.

You see long string theroy was near the end, and it's exactly where I [realized I] glazed over.

At exactly this point the alarm will sound bacause you ahave opened the bonnet without unlocking the doors!
Will Munns

>At exactly this point the alarm will sound bacause you ahave opened the bonnet without unlocking the doors!

Ah, yes! Forgot about the alarm. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt (and earplugs).
