MG MGF Technical - Overheat
Hi, I hope you guys are able to help, I got stuck in a traffic jam on the M1 last week, and after a while white smoke started poring out of the boot. but there was no indication of any kind of overheating, neither the oil and water temperature gauges went anywhere near the red... after i let it cool down for a while I pulled of onto a side road and it seemed to run fine.... its happened once more since then while idling at traffic lights, the smoke seems to be coming from the expansion tank. I read the previous thread about overheating but wasn't sure if this was HGF as it seem to run fine unless its sat idling for a long time.. if anyone know what this is, your help would be appreciated Cheers Steven |

Did the temp gauge move at all?, if not then: failed expansion tank cap, get a new one from halfords, If so then probebly the fan fuse has gone |

no, it just sat in the middle as normal, in fact I've never once seen it move above half way... you may be right about the fan fuse going though, I haven't heard the fan start when the engine overheats I've looked at the expansion cap, it doesn't look damaged or anything, and there is no evidence of white gunk or brown sludge, but I'll get a new one just in case.. |

Definatly sounds like the cap then |

I agree with Will here - the expansion tank cap is suspect. If the expansion tank has emptied at any time, then the safest thing to assume is that air has been allowed into the cooling system: plan to bleed the system of air. If the tank never went dry, then no problem, :o) |
