MG MGF Technical - overheating and coolant smell

Hi all, need some advice, my beloved mgf 18i
suddenly started to smell and temp gauge climbed into the red when I stpped at a traffic light. Coolant tank in boot empty and boiling like mad when I stopped car. Had it towed to dealer they spent a week looking at first said it HGF, then they said there's a weeping bleed screw,
returned car to me saying they basically dont know, drove to work this morning when I stopped the smell of burnt coolant is back dont know if its from a spill when the replaced lost fluids any one have a similar problem, I have lost faith in my car and do not feel that I can trust it any more.

Mike,
did they replace the duff bleed screw and bleed the system again? Have you replaced the coolant overflow tank cap? If it does not have a little white dot on it, and it is origional, I would replace it. Or just replace it anyway. If it is not letting the presure in the cooling system become high enough, it will boil, and spew coolant all over the place.

Hi Neil Thanks for the info have bought new coolant cap will replace tonight and hope it cures the problem How things in the land of the long white clould did not think there would be many MGF's there

Mike said "I have lost faith in my car and do not feel that I can trust it any more."

might be better to say "I have lost faith in my dealer and do not feel that I can trust them any more."

Cars can have problems. If the dealer and the owner cannot find the problem it seems worse but ...
Sprinter (Miz says no JohnP)

Don't see many TFs here yet. I have a Trophy Yellow TF 120. Selling slowly, I suspect. Getting a lot of MGFs in from Japan these days. Getting quite cheep, allthough most are 1996-7, prices as low as about $NZ15,000. Some are rubbish.

I think I found the problem looks like the hose into the coolant tank leaks when under pressure. We are having 40 deg c that is days at the moment, hope this cures the problem so much for dealers spending a week trying to find the problem. Dont think they could find there way home never mind the problem.
