MG MGF Technical - Oxygen Sensor

Follow up on lambda problems as reported in another thread.

Fitted new one and what a difference, not only did The Squirrel fly through the MOT this time BUT she is livelier and MPG much improved - as Jon says MPG is an indicator.

Not sure if the old unit had failed or if the wiring was to blame - as per John Thomas report - it (the wiring) certainly was extremely brittle after 13 years of being cooked BUT decided to fit a new unit complete - for the sake of £40.00 it was not worth the hassle of messing around.

BTW on the price front an ex-MG dealer (Whitehouse of Crayford) wanted about £155.00 JUST for the unit, got a direct replacement (not a universal one) from a motor spares company.

Also available on Flea Bay.

£155.00 for the O2 sensor! It is listed on EPC for £112.40 plus VAT - £129.26.

Even that is OTT - on e-bay they have the correct Bosch part for £47.00 or a Denso for around £40.00

I got the Denso from the local auto parts shop £39.00 inc VAT.
Ted Newman

Ted,

do you know whether the Denso type was just plug & play including the right connector and cable length ?
Or did they have to do conversion at the cable or connector ?

*g* .. and any p/n available for the very specific unique EPC ?

I only have by now
MHK10006 - Sensor - oxygen / lambda sensor
Bosch p/n 0258 003 229 (0258003229)
4-wire
until VIN YD522572

Straight 'plug and play' - listed in the catalogue as a direct replacement. The hardest part was getting the old unit out - manifold removed first to make it easier and left with penetrating oil for a while - the whole then replaced with new gaskets.

BTW I had the use of a workshop with lift and the willing help of a 'younger' (only 65) mechanic. To be honest he did most of the work - I just undid the hood and the engine cover and showed him some printouts from Dieters pages then let him get his hands dirty and scrape his knuckles!! LOL

This supplier on e-bay,supplying LAMBDA sensors looks very good

Thanks for the link - they're not a million miles from us. :D

Nice one Ted,

Its easy not to notice the gradual loss of mpg's, a plus point of the MOT !

It has been said on a few BBs that the lambda sensor is more important to emissions than the cat, yet most people start with there.

can anyone help I bought my mgf just last week and had a new exhaust fitted yesterday. the oxygen sensor was replaced by a universal unit? but now the engine light is on. I have been told the car has to go on to dealers computer to switch off light.
