MG MGF Technical - pain filling her up
Is it me or is the MGF a pain in the ass to put fuel in? It clicks off all the time. Pull it out a bit push it in a bit ease it on or hammer it home doesn’t make any difference. Maybe the nozzles are a different shape in the UK. Also just curious, whats the fan in the right hand air intake that stays on after the car is switched off cooling? Thanks :o) |

Try turning the filler nozzle a little to the left or right. That works for me. The filler pipe could be kinked. That fan cools the engine bay. |

Aggree with Sam. Beside of a kinked interconnection hose there's also a metal flap (non return valve) inside the filler tube. May be that's sticky. Engine bay cooling is to prevent the fuel lines from to many heat. The engine would stall when the fuel starts to boil in the fuel lines. |

Hi P, Yep, a big P in the A when filling up. People look at you at the petrol station with the glare "Oy!, your car's full love, how much more do you rekon you can get in it"! unbeknowns to them you've only bloody put a half a litre in the thing. I usually turn the nozzle upside down. Looks silly but works. Try not to drop the petrol cap while your trying to place it somewhere. Also when you eventually have filled up, get the nozzle to make as much loud noise as possible by slightly knocking it as you remove it a couple of times so then the starers really have something to look at. It's fun going to the service station in Australia. Sue |

I've heard that, after filling their cars with fuel, lady drivers remove the filler nozzle very carefully and give it a wipe with a tissue before replacing it in it's holder. Guys just whip it out, dribbling some petrol down the side of the car and give it a couple of taps on the side of the car. ....I'll get my coat. :-) |

Ha ha Sam thats a good one. thanks guys and gals, its not just me then :o)x |

I have always filled it up by having the handle at the 3 O'clock position. If you get into the habit of stopping past the pump a little, the hose will be at a natural angle for you to keep the nozzle level at 3PM position. I found its the best position to fill the tank. Cheers, Branko |

Mine's exactly the same, rotate it 1/4 turn and its fine :) |

I thought the manual actualy showed you how to do it, which is with the handle horizontal and the rear of the handle pointing towards the car door. |
David Karle |
Do you think the guy who wrote the manual ever put petrol in one? |
Sam Murray |
We have ued the method shown in the manual for all the 15 years we have had the car with no problems. |
David Karle |
Just saying that you shouldn't always take the manual for gospel. Lot's of cars have quirks that only become apparent well after production has started and the manuals printed. |
Sam Murray |
Like David we have followed the instructions in the manual since taking delivery of the Green Squirrel in February 1996 - no problems. |

I had from new a 1996 F in the UK which I sold when we moved to Oz some 6 years ago. Now have a 2002 TF. I have never had problems in filling at the pump either in the UK or here in Sydney Just follow the instructions in the book. Cheers Rick |
