MG MGF Technical - Paranoid

Would some of you nice people do me a favour ?

Could you measure the depth of tread on the inside and outside edges of your front tyres ?

I have a feeling Rob bell is going to strangle me if I keep going on about this wear subject.

Incidently I have a small discrepancy of about 0.6mm at the moment.
S Laithwaite

Why dont you either get your tracking done or buy new tyres ?
Swiss Tony

Dear Swiss

I have done both !
S Laithwaite

Is your front left more shallow than your front right?

(that'd be roundabouts).
Neil H

You may even need to get the suspension pumped up.
David Clelland

A half of a millimetre is not much - how many miles have you done on the tyres?

Steve.
Steve

As Neil says, this could be scrub from enthusiastic cornering. Best way to tell if there is a tracking issue here is to use you fingers, and feel the temperature across the thread of the tyre. If the tyre is warmer on the outside than on the inside, then yes, this is a tracking problem, and there may be too much toe-in. If the temperature is equal over the width of the tyre, there is nothing to worry about.

"Don't panic Mr Manerwing!!!" as Cprl Jones would exclaim... ;o)
Rob Bell

Thankyou

As Rob knows I have whinged about the last few set of tyres as all have scrubbed on the inside even with tracking set to 5 min toe in.

Now somewhat labouring the point I continue to monitor these new tyres like a hawk. To the extent of digital vernier calipers. Excessive I know but they are handy.

The tyres have done about 1200 miles and as Steve said 0.6 mm is not alot so we will see over the next 2-3 thousand.

I asked the question for people to measure their tread just to get some current feedback. Aside from this issue the car really does stick to the road like glue, so not all is bad. Would like a few more GG's though ;-) That brings me to the sports exhaust mgf center are doing at the moment. Phoenix so I am told. Any good ?

S Laithwaite

Based on your comments Re: "Sticking like glue" and "More GG's" being required, I can only assume that you drive your car at the upper end of its performance range. If this is the case, and the inner edges of both fronts are worn it is probably being caused by the camber change that occurs when the front suspension is depressed. (Same as having the hydragas set low) This combined with the effort of high speed braking will probably wear the inner more than the outer edges of the front tyres.
Phil Stafford

I do my best :-)
S Laithwaite

As you say you will really need to monitor it. Potentially, for 10 times the distance, ie 12k miles, there could be 6mm difference, which is substantial. You will need to do another 1200 miles and see if the difference has changed.
Steve

I have F1 GSD2s fitted all round and with a setting of 5mins toe in at the front I was still getting more wear on the inside of the tyre. I have now reset the tracking to 10mins toe in and so far the wear seems to be even on the latest set of tyres.

Bruce
Bruce Caldwell

Thanks for that Bruce. If Rob is still reading this thread is 10 min toe in on each side excessive ? Or will this be ok ?
S Laithwaite

Yup, it's fine Stephen - that's precisely the setting that Alan uses on his car.

I've not tried it myself - but in addition to Bruce and Alan, I think that Nicholaj may have done this too?

Nikolaj tried several, *Vorspur* is Toe In./Nachspur - Toe Out
10 minutes was the rear. (with PU and lowered) 5 minutes at the front.

I'm on 5 minute toe in at the front as well withe the lowered suspension.
*No problems*.

Is it possible you have any worn balljoint or track rod end at the front ??
