MG MGF Technical - Passenger side air scoops! Feasty your eyes!!

Ok, after much talk, I finally have an operational prototype!

I will be carrying out the tests that I mentioned before at the weekend but for the meantime, what is everyones opinions?

Apologies that these were taken with a mobile phone camera but it was the only thing I had to hand last night.
The angle of the scoop is done to follow what I imagined the flow of air would be as it travels down the side of the car.

And before anyone asks, yes it is in carbon fibre.
I only have very limited access to this and they will be more expensive but the majority will be exactly the same, just in GRP ready for painting.
(BPR, I've already got you penciled in for a carbon one)

So let me know what you think chaps. :)

DarrenB

Looks good how are they fited on? Very similar to the Revery (bp) ones for the Elise.
Steve Ratledge

Looks extremely good Kris. How far from the body do they protude? The current camera angles don't make this entirely clear.
Rob Bell

The two things I wanted when I started this was for it to not look out of place on the car and for it to be able to be fitted without any body modifications!

So, because of that, the scoop is flush with the bodywork above and below it. (Sorry, I'm making a complete hash of explaining this I think!)

It is also completely removable just by taking out the existing 2 screws.

I will have better/clearer photo's by the end of the weekend along with hopefully, some video of it on the car moving at speed.

HTH.

Kris, what sort of price are you going to be talking about?

I think the idea and design is excelent . I must admit that when i first saw this thread i imagined something that replaced the whole intake duct ( not for me ).The idea of them being removable and fitted behind the existing duct is fantastic.Carbon fibre is not for me, grp sprayed to match my anodised ducts would look fantastic. Please let us all know costs etc...well done Kris..mel..

It looks rather good, although I would have loved it more if it wasn't really flat between the body above and below it. Or in other words: a bit more scoop won't be bad.

Do you have plans to have one at the other side as well ?

Carbon would be my choice, although I could be interested in some sets in GRP as well.

So if you have price indications, please let us know.
Erik

I am looking forward to seeing those photos Kris - and like everyone else, knowing the price!

Stylistically, you are never going to keep us all happy, but what you've achieved is very nicely understated. Picking up on Erik's point, it really needs to be a scoop in order to get air into the intake. If it is too flat, it may be little more than a flap over the aperature. But I am sure it isn't - and the pictures will certainly clarify what you've done so far :o)

Well done - I like the carbon fibre look!
Rob Bell

Morning all,

Thanks for the comments.

It seems the general view is that I need to enlarge the scoop slightly.

Maybe a bit too subtle at the moment? So thinking of trying to bring it out by about an inch. Should then sit just slightly further out than the body but still not too obtrusive (sp?).

I've also had it mentioned to me about making it come down more at the bottom, a bit more like the Elise's. The thing with that though is the difference between the side profiles of the F and the Elise. The Elise has very definite channels down the side to direct airflow directly to the vent, however, the F has only a slight channel which mainly runs along near the bottom of the door and as it reaches the rear quarter it starts to rise (really sorry about this description, I know it's naff!) towards the vent, thus the reason I have the vent aimed slightly down.

Prices are looking at the moment to be £28 for GRP and £48 for Carbon Fibre. But I'll confirm that once everything is finished.

If you're going to the natter this Sunday then you can see the one pictured as I'm using the drive up there as a bit of a test.

>> I've also had it mentioned to me about making it come down more at the bottom, a bit more like the Elise's. <<

I don't think that you need to bring it out as abruptly as that - the style you've got is already nicely judged for the F - so if it can be developed into more of an semieliptical shape (I wouldn't have the total "height" of the scoop from the body work more than 25mm), I think that it'll work just fine.

If you were thinking of doing one for the TF, then I would look to emulate the scoops on the TF200HPD - as these suit that car's styling very nicely.

Rob, if you're on MSN IM, can you PM me?
As wouldn't mind asking you something regarding your last point.
Kris

Hi Darren,

Done!

Are you going to the natter on Sunday?

You can have a look at it properly then.

Also, I read you're post on the .org about your paint.
Would be interested to hear more!

Cheers,

Kris.
Kris

hio kris doubt i will be at the natter - my car was at Gaydon parked in between scarlet fever and the Mustard yellow F - i have sent you a pic of it to your work email and pics of the paint as well

Cheers

Outstanding paint Darren!

Can I ask how much you paid for it?
Kris

Just in case anyone wants to see pics of the air scoop I have fitted can be seen here (also some additional pics of my mgf):-

I've found it to be quite effective from 50mph onwards... not a huge difference but I believe it pulls better.
fran

Great looking car you've got there Fran :o)

Your duct looks similar to another I've seen - I think it was YellowTrophy's on XPF?

If I am being honest, I think that Kris' looks better, but I suspect that yours is more effective as things currently stand, Fran.
Rob Bell

Fran bought it from Yellow Trophy, which is why it seems familiar. :)

Have looked into enlarging the arc now and it doesn't seem like it will be a problem.
(Famous last words!)

Unfortunately, I won't be able to have a newer one ready in time for Sunday, but the one I have now will be able to give people a good idea of what it will be like.
Kris

Thanks guys. Yes that right Rob, I bought it from Yellow Trophy from the X-Power forum! Ha ha surprisingly it looks better in the flesh then in the pics I'll have to show you it sometime, but yeah I've felt a slight improvement higher up the rev-range!
fran

Probably what we'd expect Fran - so it sounds as though it is doing the job! :o)
