MG MGF Technical - Persistant Alarm
Please can anyone help with a rather annoying alarm problem. It seems to be going off every day since the weather has become real MG weather. It sounds no matter if the roof is up or down, and it does not seem to make any difference if it is on the first stage locking or second. I don't know if it is connected, but the interior light is also playing up in that it stays on until the car is locked ie. even when driving. I would be grateful for any advice as I am a girl and still quite new to the MG experience, although have to admit I wouldn't change it for the world now! Cheers Christine |

Christine Checked the archives for you as this seems a common problem (never had it myself yet). Check the archives using words like 'alarm door lock' and select the option to 'include all these words'. You should find a number of threads that may help you. The most likely cause seems to be a faulty microswitch in the door lock. Not acheap fix as the whole lock may need changing. Welcome to F (TF in my case) ownership. |

Christine You don't say what model, F or TF, or year or UK spec or imported spec but ... I'm not an electrician but there have been quite a lot of reports along these lines. The door locks can cause problems that often show as alarm sounding as and when it feels like it. As your interior light seems to be staying on it could be that the system doesn't realise that the door is closed until actually locked? This again suggests a lock problem. There are a couple of contributors on the BBS who are knowledgeable on electical matters and will probably get around to logging on sometime tomorrow and may be better able to help. In the mean time search the ARCHIVE for phrases like ALARM or DOOR LOCK etc and you may get a clue. Have you bought the car recently? Is it warrantied? When my lock started playing up I finally resorted to unplugging the horns so that I got a decent nights sleep before I changed the RH door lock. |

I took so long to type that Norman beat me to it. If I remember correctly, the lock is somewhere in the £80 bracket. Not generally rebuildable and has to be replaced. |

Cheers guys - have looked in the archive and found some handy hints. Will check it out. Apologies for the lack of info re model. It is a '97 MGF VVC - looks like this is quite a common problem looking at the archive. Certainly seems as though microwaves have a lot to answer for:o) |

Tony has instructions regarding the lock @ http://www.apttony.co.uk/Servicing/Servicing.html and at mine you find the switch details. http://www.mgfcar.de/door_lock/index.htm HTH Dieter |
