MG MGF Technical - Persistant Front End Noise.
For 4 years since buying the car, there has been a persistant noise seeming to come from the back of the dash. Many attempts have failed to find the source. Whilst preparing to put the car back on the road after the winter lay-up, I needed to remove the "Underbonnet Closing Panel" (the formed plastic at the back of the underbonnet area). It was loose. Closer examination showed that the two lower plastic nuts securing it to the rear of the spare wheel well had never been fitted during original build. Two plastic nuts at 53p each. The most expensive plastic that I have ever bought (Except for Ann's Credit Card), but it did solve the problem. Have a look. Part No. RCYH10001 Geoff F. |

Geoff... I wonder if this is the problem thats been plaguing me for the last year... I guess if I drive around with the closing panel off then I'd find out? Was yours a kind of rattling noise? Chris |

Just for information these two nuts were never fitted from factory and just locate on the two pegs, but a good idea to fit the nuts. |

Chris, The noise was more of a low frquency buzz. Mike, OK, but they are in the Parts Book and Workshop Manual so they are designed to be fitted. Another consideration was that this panel needs to be secure so that it cannot rub on the LH pipe out of the ABS Unit. Geoff F. |

I have a variety of noises a buzz behind my right ear at certain engine revs and a clunk/tap through the brake pedal on sharp left hand bends These have been with the car for a few years now and nothing has broken so they cant be that bad but they are very very irritating!! |

Neil, Assuming you drive a RHD car and, thus, that the buzz behind your right ear comes from the door side, here are two things I fixed on my car (TF 160). The first one was the door pin which was buzzing in its hole. I solved that one on a day when I had the door card off anyway, by applying one layer of black cloth duct tape (3M) around the pin at just the right hight so it never shows above the edge, even when open. Buzzing gone! The second thing - a slight clicking noise when the seatbelt moves over a bump - was solved by removing a plastic flap attached to the top of the seatbelt reel, underneath the parcel shelf lining. That flap is present on TF cars (at least those from 2002) but I know most earlier Fs don't have that flap anyway. Now, with the hard top on (and on a reasonably smooth road), my car is totally silent apart from the nice exhaust sound and/or the stereo... :-) ) Per P.S: ...of course, to attain that result I also had to retighten/tape/lubricate/pad/attach/refit/alter/tie up most things behind the dash... But that's another (long) story ... ;-) |
