MG MGF Technical - Piper inlet cam rotor arm mounting

Hi all,

Can anyone confirm whether a Piper inlet cam would come with the rotor arm spindle already attached? The semi-flexible mounting in the end of the standard camshaft has broken up and needs re-glueing, I'm about to attempt that but really not convinced that I'm going to do a sufficiently accurate job. If I can turn this into an excuse to go for some new cams, then my conscience will be clear ;o)

Thanks in advance
Mike Hankin

The rotor stub is not a part supplied with cams, last time I checked I was quoted £25 from Rover!! How did they go bust with those prices??
mike

Thanks Mike, I couldn't even get a part number, let alone a price :o( Oh well, the glue is setting now, best guess applied, fingers firmly crossed...

See if you can get hold of a VVC exhaust cam, this has a M10 thread in the end. Remove the stub from the old cam the rubber mount will disintegrate when you do so but you can have a M10 thread turned onto the stub end and then screw it into the VVC cam end with a lock nut. You will have to remove the locating ring on the end of the cam this can be ground off easily. This way you will have a better profile cam and saved £25

It is about No 2 ?

25 quid plus VAT of course.

Great advise from Mike, I think.

And if you follow Mike's advice, then you might as well fit another VVC exhaust cam to replace the standard item - and then you've got effectively the same set up as a TF135 (albeit with 0.2mm less lift, but still a useful improvement over standard).

Rob, I'm tempted, but having finally got brave and turned the key, I appear to have resurrected the engine for the grand total of £2.29 for some black sealant/adhesive. We like that! It's official, Mike's engine is held together with glue ;o)

Thanks to a donation of some new crush washers (from Brakes International - nice people) I've fixed the leaking banjo connection on the NSR caliper, and replaced the NSR bearing & drive flange, and re-fitted the slave cylinder that was temporarily re-homed on Fiona's car, so it not only runs but it engages gears, goes in a straight line, and stops too. Bliss!
Mike Hankin

Fingers crossed it'll hold together too Mike - what adhesive did you use?

I never did ask, but been wanting to - how on earth did you discover this problem - and why wasn't the valve train trashed in the process?
Rob Bell

Basically windscreen sealant, as advised by a couple of old hands at the K Series game. Needs to be something that remains slightly flexible when cured, and can withstand high temperatures.

The valves weren't in danger, the camshaft just stopped turning the rotor arm spindle when the original adhesive gave up. Thought initially the coil had packed up but AA man discovered that he could turn the rotor arm with his finger. That was when he'd finished chuckling at the sorry scene - me shivering with immobolised F, Fiona (suitably attired in pink pyjamas & fur coat) parked right behind with a clutch slave cylinder that had chosen that exact moment to conk out, and an MX5 driver repeatedly driving past honking his horn 8-(

You forgot to mention the trainers.
If you must humiliate me, then do it properly!

Oh how we laughed (or was it the MX5 driver??)

D'oh! Of course... ignore me, I am slowly loosing the plot...

Hmm - windscreen sealant. Cunning. Available from Halfrauds, or some other motor factor?
Rob Bell

...that'll be jobhunting combined with fatherhood combined with all your other Fing commitments... ;o)

Granville Silicon Sealant was the stuff used, from a motor factor. Chavfords would probably have it too, but I try not to browse their range if I can possibly help it ;o)

What a shame there won't be any MX5s at Silverstone, I may have to go to Anglesey to settle the score..!
