MG MGF Technical - Piston liner problems

Has anyone had any piston liner failure ?

I had all the signs of head gasket failure a couple of weeks ago but the mechanic I use has replaced a piston liner which has been a very expensive repair.

I'm just curious to find out if this is a rare problem or if anybody else has had the same trouble
Mad Girl in a Frenzy

This does happen and can cause a HGF. Ive had two HGF's now and so far the liner was ok. This can be a problem I think though on higher mileage cars. Mines done 90k. Dave Andrews the k series guru did mention that the liners may have had to be replaced but I was lucky.

Im surprised that only one had to be replaced. Unless it was damaged in someway. I thought that all of them had to be replaced.

I dont think this is a rare problem tho...????

Liner failure on standard engines isn't especially common, but on higher performance derivatives of the K-series, liners have been known to crack or even ovalise...

I think that you've been unlucky - as a DIY task, if you can find the correct liner grade, this is a faily straight forward task to undertake. :o)

Irony Rob?
Head off
Exhaust out
Sump off
liners clamped
remove bolts on piston bigend (usually requires crank rotation)
remove piston
...

this is about the most difficult job I can think of and more work than striping the engine down to swap the crank out. I suppose it's just following instructions, but the manual is very long!

Easy !! Ha!

When i come to install my omega pistons you can come over and give me a hand rob!!! :-)

Would be delighted! I'll be figuring all this out myself when I fit up-graded liners to the engine block of my supercharged K project engine! :o)
