MG MGF Technical - Power boost what?

What on earth is this? and does it work?

And what about 52mm TB?

Neil H

Neil,

It allows the fuel pressure to be adjusted - a small screw on the top does the trick. It replaces the standard fuel pressure regulator which is fixed at something like 2.8-3.0 bar IIRC. Production variances mean any individual car could be anywhere in that pressure range.

I have one of these FSE Power Boost Valves, which has allowed me to adjust the fuelling to suit the fact that my engine has a ported cylinder head and other breathing mods. The adjustment was done with the help of a rolling road, so that we could see the fuelling throughout the power/torque curves. It made a big difference for me - an extra 10bhp at peak power and gains all the way through the curves. I also get a bonus of a few extra mpg on fuel consumption :-) Not a bad bonus for a car now putting out 182 bhp!

However, on a standard car it might make no difference at all. Also, it's no good guessing and just upping the fuelling, as you might impact power negatively! At the same rolling road day, Rob Bell discovered that an uprated standard fuel pressure regulator was over-fuelling his car and robbing him of power. He's since removed it :-)

Ideally, you'd remap the Engine Management System (EMS) to get the right level of fuelling at all points through the power curve, but as you know we can't do anythign with older MEMS. The Rolls Royce solution would be to buy an aftermarket (Emerald) EMS and have it mapped properly. The FSE Power Boost Valve is just a crude attempt to fix the problem if one exists.

Before bothering - get you car on a rolling road and have the fuelling checked out.

Completely agree Dave :o)

There is a section on fuel pressure regulators on http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/ - but the server is currently having problems. Should be back on line a little later today though :o)

A 52mm throttle body makes little difference to power on a standard 1.8 K-series without other breathing modifications, but it feels great nonetheless: the throttle response feels much much better :o)

This is what I call a power boost
yummy

Neil

I've got a VVC with ITG, and a CAT bypass (don't tell Will Munns), so breathing well at both ends.
So TB next then?
Neil H

Next is the head!

Gasflow time

Neil

Yup, TB next - then start thinking of porting and a new exhaust cam (see the DVA web site :o))
