MG MGF Technical - Power Hood, bending bracket

I'm trying to find out how many of us have the problem of "bending brackets" on the power hood.

So, if you have a power hood fitted to your F', could I touble you to let me know, how long it's been fitted (was it by the dealer), if (how many times) the brackets have bent (were they replaced or just bent back). and any other problems you have had with it.

Thanks everyone for your help.
Keith

Dieter's got some info on a 'fix' to this problem on his web site -

see http://www.mgfcar.de/powerhood/index.htm for installation comments

see http://www.mgfcar.de/powerhood/bracket_improvement.htm for modifications suggested to bracket

Thanks Rob.

Unfortunately I have a hard top, so cant use this modification.

My dealer faxed the problem over to MG in April and as yet, has not got a reply. This is 2 summers on the trot that it's not been working and the cars only 2 and a bit years old.

As this appears to be a design fault I think MG should fix (or remove) it, so I'm trying to gather enough info to prove it for the 18th, when the man from MG visits the dealer.

I gather that Rover themselves simply dropped the option because of the problems you (and evidently many others) have experienced, so, sadly, I think that you are best shot of it :o(

Sorry to hear that the mod doesn't help you :o(

I had the power-hood fitted to my previous V reg F by the dealer and never had any problems with it. In fact I was sorely tempted to have it fitted again to the new TF but expenses wouldn't allow it :o(

I do miss not being able to quickly whip the hood up or down at the traffic lights but at £800? I thought this was an extravagance I could live without :o)

Hi,

>Sorry to hear that the mod doesn't help you :o(

Dooh, I had to read twice until I think I undersand now whats going on here. (my language problem)

Did I get it right that welding that add on from Ton Naathuis to the bracket makes the use of the HT impossible ?

Or is it related to the 'official supplement' stuff in principal?
http://www.mgfcar.de/powerhood/supplement0.pdf
http://www.mgfcar.de/powerhood/supplement1.pdf

Please confirm and I'll add it to the site asap.
I assume that Ton Maathuis from Luxemburg will be interested as well before he gets the idea to purchase a HT and I'll drop him a line then.

Thanks in advance
Dieter

Hi Dieter,

Yes you did get it right, the original bracket just fits between the hoodframe and the hardtop rear fixing bracket. If you modify the brackets, as Tom suggests, the hardtop fixtures (on the car) have to be removed, so you cant fit the hardtop.

Form the lack of replies, I guess that not many of us have been unlucky enough to buy the power hood (and it's assiciated problems). Anyway, I've managed to stop the brackets bending by fabricating a tie bar that runs between the brackets and over the top of the tee bar housing. It works a treat, but obviously you can see it, so I'll have to "pretty" it up a bit. By allowing it to pivot at the ball joints and a bit of a mechanism to keep it vertical, it rises vertically as the hood opens, just between the windstop and the headrests. That will keep it working until I hear from MG.

Keith,

Sorry for the off topic posting, and perhaps we can continue this offline (simon@simonclark.com), but;

I need to have my F serviced in MK and have had trouble getting DC B to answer the phone in the service dept - which makes me loathed to spend my cash with them.

Do you use them? Somoneone else? Any advice?

Thanks in advance,

Simon
