MG MGF Technical - Power steering

Hi guys,

Just had a call from the wife who was driving the F to work this morning. Fine all the way, but as she was about to pull into the parking space, a light came on the dashboard and the steering went very very heavy.

That's as much as I know I'm afraid, but I thought I'd run it past you guys, could it be a temporary glitch? Or something easily fixable (by someone with zero techie ability!)? Or is it a call to the AA?

Have a look thru the archives - the stearing will come back to life when she starts the car, but the light indicates that a fault was found in the system (help in the archives) The car is perfectly safe to drive - but the assistance is switched off (so the stearing is 'conventional')

As Will says, steering is conventional: she will need Shredded Wheat to get out of the parking space but will not notice any difference over about 40 mph. Never seen mention of one failing but ... EPAS does have a big protection fuse all to itself. Under the bonnet near battery in a ciggie sized white plastic box. Quick to check.

System may just revert to normal next time round.

Thanks guys, will get her to check it at lunch, and if it's still a problem then I'll go via her office on the way home so she can have her car back and I get to put my shredded wheat to use. Would weetabix be better in this situation though? ;-)

your wife may find that she needs to actually drive the car rather than just start it to reset the EPAS. If it does not come back on after driving the car then it needs to go on testbook to try and determine the fault.

Phew - P went and started the car and everything appears to be fine. She didn't appreciate my comment that perhaps it wasn't the power steering and that she'd pulled the handbrake on too early - hence why the car felt strange and a light came on the dash!

Guess whose dinner will be in the dog tonight - if we actually had a dog of course!

Adrian, that made me laugh - thanks, just what I needed!
