MG MGF Technical - Power Steering Failure
Hi, The EPAS on my 2000 MGF seems to have failed. The car has been off the road for around 8 months, before I took it off the road I had the common EPAS "lefty" problem that seems to bug most MGF's. I started her up at the weekend and the power steering is not working at all now, when I start it up I can hear clicking noise that seems to be coming from the passenger foot well and the EPAS light is aluminated. Any ideas..? Cheers Andrew |

The passenger footwell is where the EPAS electronic control unit (ECU) lives. A solenid clicks when power is applied to the ECU. How do I know this? Because, I have an EPAS cut out switch which is wired into this ECU. Will Munns put the design together a long time ago and Rib Bell hosts the instructions on his website at http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/ If you take a look at this you will see where the ECU is located and it may hekp you locate the problem. Perhaps faulty/dirty contacts at the ECU? |

Oops - my fingers need some help from a spell checker or an edit function - that should be Rob Bell of course and help - not hekp! |

Hi Andrew, I had the same problem with my MGF 2000. When i got it, my garage was not rebuild, and the car was standing there in wet and damp air for 6 months. As Dave writes, i to got the advice from Rob Bell to give the contacts down there a good cleaning with contact spray, and it did the trick, so i am sure you can cure yours with the same easy job. Fingers crossed. Kjeld |

Hi everyone, My powersteering light has come on and obviously not working, i to get that same clicking noise in the footwell? any ideas on what i can do? what contacts should i spray with contact oil? rgds mark |

You need contact cleaning spray, and the connectors that need attention are those to the EPAS ECU mounted under the passenger side of the dashboard, above the glove box. Remove the glove box first, and all will be revealed :o) |

My power steering has also stopped working and the EPAS light has come on. Is it easy to remove the glove box? By the way what is the significance of whether the speedo is working. Mine also stopped working at the same time. Regards Andrew |

the speedo feeds the PAS ith a signal so the PAS knows how much assistance to put in. if you fix the speedo the PAS will jump back into life |

Thanks Will. How easy a job is it to fix the speedo? Andrew |

Andrew, probably very easy - sign up as a member to get access to the archives and find out how. |
