MG MGF Technical - pre 2000 VVC spec question

Okay. I thought I knew, but now I know I don't!

The pre-2000 VVC.
Does it come with a 48/52mm throttle body?

I thought 48mm, and I was planning on buying a 52mm. But I have just seen an advert for a 52mm throttle body that says "as fitted to the MGF VVC"
Neil H

48 alloy.
Will Munns

Thanks Will.

So not as fitted to VVC!

I presume that should read trophy?!
Neil H

I thought it was 48mm plastic, al least I'm sure mine has a plastic TB - its black coloured not alloy coloured??
Kevin s

The plastic version is 48mm as well, but it can be distorted by overtightening the airfilter.

The plastic throttle is on MPi cars, the VVC got alloy, the VVC-160PS engine (as fitted in the trophy and above) gets the 52mm alloy
Will Munns

Gonna check this out, i too thought the original VVC got the 48mm plastic TB and it was only post MY2K that the alloy version became available.

This is because SU made all the TBs originally (all plastic) and it was only when Del'Orto took over with the introduction of the Trophy 160 model (first alloy version, but 52mm dia in this case) that the 48mm alloy one (also a Del'Orto item) became available.

Anyway, that was my understanding of the situation (i need to check it out to be sure though).

Alloy Del'Orto throttle bodies were introduced from 2001 for ALL K-series engines. Dana industries, the company that purchased the SU manufacturing plant, closed in 2000 forcing the change.

Interestingly, as a bit of throttle body trivia, you can once again buy the SU throttle body - in both 48 and 52mm formats - from Burlen fuel systems in Salisbury - they're the company that bought the trade mark and the rights to manufacture all SU carburrettor designs.

So back to the original question:
Pre-2001 VVC: black plastic throttle body, 48mm SU
Post-2001 VVC: silver alloy throttle body, 48mm Del'Orto
Trophy 160 and TF160: silver alloy throttle body, 52mm Del'Orto
Rob Bell

<standing = corrected>

Sorry for the plastics misinformation.
Will Munns

Yep,

My VVC 96 'had' a plastic 48mm TB. Not now though!

Plastic all plastic from start of MEMS 1.6 and carried over with MEMS 2J with VVC. In respect to MGF the plastic body finished at VIN 522573, i.e. after 2000 model year commences in Sept 1999. Replaced with 48mm alloy body, part number MHB 000090. Trophy 160 introduces the 52mm alloy body (MHB 000261) which has been carried over to the TF160 and also used on the TF135.
